Are they the same plant? If not, what I have smells like lemon. It returns every year and spreads like crazy. It also puts out tiny flowers in the mid to late summer. Is it mint or balm? I don't have a picture but will run and take one if needed.

Lemon balm is in the mint family. I have some, it looks very much like the peppermint and spearmint that are also planted nearby. Color is slightly more yellow, and a quick taste always confirms I'm picking the lemon balm rather than the other mints.

Lemon balm is a mint but not all mints are lemon balm. I like the smell of lemon verbena every better than lemon balm.

Well, I still don't know what I have. But I like it. It grows between the back of our house and the sidewalk. Like I said, it spreads. So sometimes it gets into the yard where I mow- smells wonderful!

Dry some for tea or using to cook with chicken. That would make a good garlic lemon chicken marinade.
