Granted, severe cold here is not North Dakota weather but it has been very cold for an extended amount of time. This is the 1st time I've had hives when the single digits or below zero weather wasn't just a night or two. Saturday it will only be single digits for highs.
Since I'm working nights (and horribly impatient) I decided to put sugar on my bees as a way of giving them a quick check. It was 20 degrees and sunny. I was quite surprised to see them flying when I got down to them, but they were. It was good to see them taking advantage the time for cleansing flights. All my hives were boiling with bees when I popped the tops to quickly add sugar. I suppose my northern bees are more hearty than I gave them credit.
I won't open them again until sometime in February.
