I’m starting my New Year out by eliminating most if not all of the chemical laced products in my home..I was curious if anyone else makes their own products?

I've made my own soap for 15 years or so, and my own laundry soap from the homemade soap.
When I tried to study lotions, any water in an oil base will grow bacteria and you have to buy things to keep them free from bacteria and mold. Anyone motivated enough can figure it out but I'm not motivated enough.
So now instead of fighting that, I use soap and water to wash and then oils/wax combinations to seal in the moisture. Oils mixed with waxes don't grow bacteria so they are safer. Well, that's my simplistic take on it.
I use Dawn for washing dishes, it works for me.

I've made soap for twenty years, also use it for shampoo. For dry skin, add fat to the diet and more water. For a patch of dry skin, like my hands in the winter, I will use olive oil, hazelnut oil, or something similar. Right now I have pumpkin seed oil, which I find is good for dry skin and boo boos.
For most of my cleaning I use very diluted dish soap (Palmolive), for some things I use baking soda. If I want more disinfectant I use whiskey.

I make my own deodorant and toothpaste. I use apricot oil for my beard. I use Dr Bronner's unscented bar soap for hair and body washing (though I have heard that it can make your hair dry, I haven't noticed that effect). Dr Bronner's unscented liquid soap for washing dishes. For laundry, a mixture of washing soda and Dr Bronner's unscented bar soap, grated, then food processed to make it really fine. Also add a few drops of lemon essential oil to the wash.
We plan to try to make (unscented) soap at some point.

There are lots of alternatives to shelf stable products offered commercially. If you want to avoid their chemicals.
I use dryer balls instead of fabric softener or dryer sheets. I use Dr Bonner's soaps too but admit I go on faith a lot with those sorts of things.
I started down the less-is-more road with toothpaste. One of the most common ingredients is Sodium laureth sulfate, a surfactant that is there because it makes things foamy. People like foamy. I like foamy. But it also created problems for me with mouth sores when I had an illness that was wreaking havoc with just about everything. It took a bit of effort but I found a commercial product without it and it helped immensely.
So now I tend to check out ingredients much more closely. And thanks to the internet, it's much more easy to get information.

I cannot use Castile. Would like to find pure lye soap, no scent.

I cannot use Castile. Would like to find pure lye soap, no scent. Waiting for Dust Lady, we make lye soap and it must have some oils of some type. Things like lard and some vegetable oils have little to no scent. The problem is that soap, alone, without any essential or fragrance oils, has the smell of soap. I know because we make it every few years, it has a clean soap like fragrance. We use it for deer hunting clothes and bodies, for cleaning the fish smell off of hands after cleaning fish. Olive oil makes castile soap and if the olive oil is 'pomace' (chemically pressed end result of pressing) or extra virgin pressed, it may have the scent of the olives which can be very smelly. I had a lotion made for me one time and it reeked of good extra virgin olive oil so it was hard to use. There are middle of the road olive oils that are not mixed with other oils but not virgin and not pomace either, that have little to no stink on them. I smelled like a salad when I used it.

My sweet Floating Feather, Castile irritates my skin and since olive oil for years and maybe even now who knows By unscrupulous bottlers added soy oil that went unnoticed...... Anyway I am allergic to soy oil. Pure lye soap like my mother made, was made of ! bacon grease! Made with goat milk is just fine. I never added essential oils in the years on the farm. We did add rose petals, sage, honey, oatmeal and one other ingredient. We either added only one ingredient for the soap, or the honey and sage were added together.

I so enjoy reading post like yours simply because it’s not heard of at least for me making your own deodorant and toothpaste. I will be making them both along with a mouthwash similar to Listerine... I’m looking into the shampoo recipes now.I make my own laundry detergent and fabric softener..the laundry detergent is Fels-Naptha soap, borax, washing soda, water and lemon essential oil..fabric softener is vinegar. Not sure what the difference is between Dr Bronners soap and Castile soap is as I have bought all the ingredients to make the Castile soap..I will be making my own body wash, liquid dish soap, dishwashing tabs, hand wash foam.. I do know that since I make my own apple cider vinegar that literally cost me pennies to make I will be incorporating it into a lot of my body and cleaning products.

Woodpecker~ I will let you know when it’s available and thank you my friend!
A couple weeks ago I made a all natural deep sleep muscle relaxer tincture that still needs another 2-weeks to infuse into a full potency..I have been taking a few tablespoons for the past couple just see if it works and out of desperation..I can’t believe how good it works! I’ve been dependent on pm pills for years and had recently run out and didn’t buy more because I wanted to get myself off of my dependency to them needless to say my body just is not adjusting to not having them AND I need my 8hrs sleep to function have always been this way all my life..I don’t know how to explain how I feel using my tincture other then you can feel your muscles relax and soon after sleep hits you and it’s deep..I mean deep and I don’t wake up in the middle of the night like before either..I’m so grateful is all I can say! It’s only 1/2 way through it’s infusion so I;m really looking forward to it’s full potential.
Next project is this week is making bath bombs, infusing more herbs, making a tincture for a deep muscle rub and making natural hand sanitizer.
Thank you for following me while I venture into this new journey to better our lives.

mythreesons , oh my! Now I'm really interested in your deep sleep muscle relaxer. I too need my 8 hours, without meds! Please get it going to its full potential🤗 Sounds like just what I need. If your not opposed to alcohol and don’t mind a unpleasant taste then you need to try this..buy valarian root and licorice root and a bottle of 80 proof vodka.. I purchased the herbs from Amazon..take a quart jar and fill it half way with the valarian root and then fill up to the rim with vodka, stir and then wait a few minutes to see if you need to add more vodka, put a cap on it and shake real well...using the same method do the same with the licorice root so you have 2-separate tinctures...put in a cool dark area and shake 3-times daily and let sit for a month according to the recipe and then filter out the herb and throw out and store liquid in clean jar again in a cool dark area to preserve it. I’ve been skimming from the top of each bottle so not to get any herb into a shot glass .. I use roughly 3-tablespoons of valarian root and 2-tablespoons of licorice root then chug it...the valarian root stinks and taste nasty but balancing it out with licorice root makes taste a whole lot better. For me it takes at least 4 hours to 5 hours before it hits me so I take it around 6:00 at night.. I don’t see why you couldn’t just consume the valarian root tincture alone if you can choke it down...I’m just going by the recipe. Valarian Root is a natural sleep aid, calms anxiety, lowers blood pressure, improves stress management and eases menstral cramps. UPDATE... I looked up the benefits of licorice root to see why the two would be combined and just realized it has nothing medicinal to help you sleep..Its used for many other medicinal purposes...but, because I can’t stand the taste of just the valarian root I;m going to use it just to help the taste factor. I hope this helps you..I’m going to up the valarian root by 4 to 1 ratio now. I have no idea if this would interfere with any medication’s so please research this for yourself.. Hugs..

If your not opposed to alcohol ... ... into a shot glass .. I use roughly 3-tablespoons of valarian root and 2-tablespoons of licorice root 5 tablespoons converts to 2-1/2 shots of Vodka, which is equivalent to a little less than 2 bottles of beer or 2 glasses of wine. It's probably good that you are taking it so early before bed as there is plenty of research that shows that, while alcohol can help you get to sleep, it is actually detrimental to sleep the second half of the night. I drink a beer almost nightly and I have also experienced poorer sleep 'sometimes' (especially when finishing right before bed). Cheers!

Ken~ I was estimating the amount so last night I measured it out and 5-tablespoons didn’t quite fit in a shot glass... I want to make it clear that my tincture is not even half way to it’s full infusion yet..So, I SHOULDNT have given that estimate at all until it’s done and because every individual person reacts differently to medicine I might only need 2-tablespoon where woodpecker might only need 1-tablespoon.. I’m taking much more right now because it’s not ready yet and I was desperately needing sleep.. I’m not a drinker and don’t like it to be honest..All I know is for me when this hits my muscles and they relax I’m out like a light all night unless my puppy wakes me up to go potty or my elderly mil is up roaming around because she is confused as to where she is she has dementia ..NOT FUN..so anyhow, my dh goes into a really deep sleep after taking my tincture when it hits him which is far quicker then myself and stays that way all night. I’m just so grateful to finally break the dependency of the pm pills..I also started growing valarian root last year way before even knowing all the benefits of it. So please disregard my measurements and wait for the tincture to sit for the full 30-days before using it...recipe saids to take 2-tablespoons so use your own judgement on the dosage.

Update on my cold cream...It does a great job at moisturizing and removing makeup..but, as a face cream I find it to be way to oily..my glasses constantly slide down my nose...I don’t care for it so I need to play with the recipe a lot more before I try to sell it.
The valarian root tincture is the bomb though! It really is a excellent muscle relaxer so no altering it all.

Be careful with licorice root if you have high blood pressure as it can raise it.

Could this muscle relaxer work for anxiety? And would it work with out the alcohol? My son has severe anxiety but alcohol isn’t an option for him.
