Here we are again with trouble with my RW optical drive, time to load up some software (turbo tax) and it doesn't read it. The computer finds it, so in my WIN 7 system, it shows up over to the right of the panel as a removable drive.
1. Use a q tip with rubbing alcohol and gently clean the optical lens. Still doesn't read it.
2. Check to see if the driver was changed by Win 7 updates, nope.
3. Update the driver from the control panel and devices, updated, not working yet.
4. Uninstall the RW drive, reboot and then when it comes up, it puts the drive back on. Still not working.
5. Uninstall the IDE/ATAPI drivers, reboot and then when it comes up, it reinstalls the drivers. Still not working.
6. On the microsoft help fixit site, go into the registry and change values, first time, still doesn't work.
7. Run the troubleshooter in Win 7, it says it may have changed something, try to make it work again, still no.
8. On the microsoft help fixit site, go into the registry and change more values, still doesn't work.
Start repeating the procedures but re-read some of the cleaning procedures. Use q tips, and rubbing alcohol and get all over the inside of the drive, starting with the lens, then each surface inside, moving the lens around so it could be cleaned under there. After 10 double sided q tips, IT WORKS. Seriously!!! I was so ready to order a new RW drive, and the qtips and rubbing alcohol fixed it.
I'm not sharing this as a question because after 6 hours of it, it's fixed, but it might help someone else here. What a huge pain it was. And be very gentle with the cleaning, and wait until it is dry before you try to load anything.
