I am heartbroken. On Sunday, we lost my very best girl, the love of my heart. My big 23 year old Thoroughbred mare, Missy (Oh Miss Hazel), had to be put down in an emergency. She came in on Sunday morning with her right hind leg swollen like a tree trunk, a condition we have battled for several years now caused by much scar tissue in that lower leg and hock that stopped circulation in the leg. She blows up in the first hot week and doesn't go back down until the coldest of winter, but this past winter she stayed swelled up and I wasn't able to get her right again.
On Sunday, she couldn't put any weight on that leg. I did the usual pressure wrap to try to press the fluid back up and out, but on the last layer, the last roll around the top of her leg, she collapsed. I tried to get her back up but was unable to, so I took off her halter and just sat with her big, beautiful head on my lap until my vet could come and gently put her down. I stroked her face and rubber her ears, and she fell asleep briefly, but the pain was intense and she actually had tears coming out of her eyes. She cried off and on as I talked to her and the pain came and went, but was just not able to stand it any longer.
I had Missy for 14 years. She was my best friend through many sadnesses and hard times. She only loved me, I was her person and no one else could ride or mess with her. If she got inured or wasn't feeling well, I was the one she would put that big head down on my chest and rest into me. She was a lovely lady, 16.2 hands, and a great grand daughter of the great Bold Ruler himself. She was a wonder, a force to be reckoned with, and my lead mare for all of her time with me. One fast head swing at any horse was enough to move them off at a gallop. That mare took no nonsense from anyone, but she was as gentle as a lamb with my little donkeys, and would let only them come eat under her chest while she stood at her bucket daily.
I miss her greatly.
