Was told computers in Civic are bad. Says there's 7 dif computers. Car only has 135k miles. Anyone know how much that's going to cost me? Other than that, car is in excellent condition. If I haven't given enough info, let me know. I'll add more information.

I am no expert but I think there is one main computer and the others sub computers/modules controlling certain areas of car and reporting back to the main computer. I truly dont understand why they insist on making computer cars so complex. I get using computer for engine management to control emissions while maintaining fuel mileage. But other than that its just gilding the lily with unnecessary complexity. And they are wanting to make new cars ever more complex, mostly cause they can, I guess.
Oh and its very rarely computer that goes bad, though they do fail with age. 2003 is alas getting up there in age. And cant imagine they all would go bad at once. Anybody claiming massive all around failure needs second independent opinion. Sounds like bit of laziness combined with desire for revenue enhancement.

I'm not a car fixer at all. DS is 35 and he's gone to getting his car's computer code either for free at a Napa or Advanced auto parts store, or buying the computer code devices (getting lower in price all the time) with the manual to do diagnostics.
The parts for replacing the computer and harnesses for it, can be found on ebay or ordered from an auto parts store.

You still need a second opinion if your mechanic isn't going to explain it all to you, and he/she probably ought to, especially if you are expected to fork out the money.

You should be able to find out which computer version you need by cross referencing the VIN number.
