I am looking for a good Sloppy Joe recipe. The ground beef/other meat/BBQ type of deliciousness that I love... but don't want to make from a can.
I've tried a few online, but haven't found anything that great.
Would you share yours? Do you use ground beef only? We grind up a lot of the turkey we raise so recipes with turkey meat are good, too.

I grew up in the midwest before canned sloppy joe mix was available.
This might not be your favorite recipe but it is the most familiar taste and there are compliments from it.
Ground beef and finely chopped onions. Cups of ketchup. (If you use Heinz, use that, or Hunts) This cooks a long time, until you can spoon out any extra fat and the ground beef can be piled up without a liquid tomato sauce in the pan.
I ran out of our home made ketchup recently. Still, you can make it with tomato sauce and all the ingredients in ketchup. (sugar, vinegar, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, celery salt, mustard powder, black pepper, cayenne pepper, and ground clove) This takes about twice as long to cook down because of the liquid in the tomato sauce.
My neighbor makes sloppy joes with mushrooms added and it is good too. My recipe is probably not an inspiring one but it tastes like the sloppy joes we ate when we were kids.

I saute celery and onions. Cook the ground beef (never 'hamburger', too much fat) and stir together. That is the basic.
I then add tomato sauce. Could be from a can, could be from scratch. For spices, some salt and then something else. I like to change it up. Garlic, ginger, marjoram. If you want a more ketchup flavor, add sugar.
My mother used canned tomato soup instead of sauce. She only used salt and pepper in anything. Her's was a bit bland, but we loved it.

This is the only recipe that I have used all of these years and will not bother to try any other... My husband (and I as welll) just love this recipe. He commented tonight how he does indeed like the addition of the oats... And it is even better the second day in our opinion! Sloppy Joes
1 pound ground beef, ground pork, or bulk pork sausage* (If using sausage - omit garlic salt) 1/2 cup chopped onion 1/2 cup chopped green pepper 1 8-ounce can tomatoes, cut up 2 tablespoons quick cooking rolled oats 1 to 1-1/2 teaspoons chili powder 1 to 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt Dash bottled hot pepper sauce
Method: In a large skillet cook meat, onion, and green pepper till meat is brown. Drain fat. Stir in undrained tomatoes, oats, chili powder, Worcestershire sauce, garlic salt, hot pepper sauce and 1/4 cup water. Bring to boiling; reduce heat. Simmer for 5 to 10 minutes or till mixture is of desired consistency. Serve in hamburger buns. Serves 6.
I've kinda changed it up for us. I use 2 lbs ground beef typically and up the green pepper and onion to 2/3 cup respectively. Will also sometimes add fresh seeded jalapeno along with the veg. 1 quart home canned tomatoes-slightly drained - nix the additional water in that case. Up the oats to a 1/2 cup. Double the chili powder and Worcestershire sauce. 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder and under 1/2 teaspoon salt... SEVERAL dashes of hot pepper sauce...
Dang this is starting to sound good! May have to defrost some ground beef and make for DH's lunches this upcoming week... ~Mari
ETA - I've used both kind of oats - really couldn't tell a difference... Cooking times may have been a tad different...

The cookbook states this in regards to them - "The rolled oats give the meat mixture just the right thickness for clinging to the buns."

The cookbook states this in regards to them - "The rolled oats give the meat mixture just the right thickness for clinging to the buns." But then they won't be as sloppy. I use oats, 1/4 cup / pound of meat, when making meatloaf and that is our favorite. Oats are healthy and I've always liked them in our meatloaf.

I think that my recipe is in here somewhere. If not.
10-12 pounds tomatoes, peeled and de-seseeded
4 green bell peppers, diced
2 red bell pepper, diced
5 large yellow onions, diced
1 cup celery, grated
3 Tbs salt
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp ground allspice
1 tsp ground cloves
1 tsp dry mustard
1 tsp ground nutmeg
3½ cups vinegar
3½ cups brown sugar
Combine all ingredients and simmer for about an hour or so to thicken. Can in pints, 30 minutes in water bath.
