We're getting grand daughter, 4 pair of poly/spandex tights, in plain solids (as requested on christmas list from the mom for the grand daughter). They are navy, tan, maroon, and black. She's wearing size 5.
I'd like to embellish them by hand (or machine), so they are a little less plain. I'd like them to be easily washable for the mom.
Anyone have experience with doing this? Suggestions?

Not sure what you have in mind but for my DGD, I have added bits of trim to the bottom of the pant legs - a short ruffled lace, a bit of cotton eyelet ruffle. I've opened the outside seam at the bottom of the leg a couple of inches up the leg and inserted a bit of flat lace to make a tiny peek'a'boo look. If you put stabilizer on the pant leg itself, you could probably embroider on them - I've not done that. If I were to do it, I'd stick to a smallish, vertical design near the calf to avoid preventing the pants from stretching.

I know you want to do something special yourself feather, I think Mzgarden's ideas are great! I'm a long time wearer of tights, with tunics. I have embroidered on them years ago and that came out well. But they have so many tights now that have the above "peek a boo" at the legs. Sewing on spandex material wasn't easy for me, because when I put them on, the design I embroidered never laid correctly, because of the stretchy material. You could always use a small embroidery hoop to pull the material while you embroider, so it might not bunch up. I did do that to a pair, but they still didn't lay right. You could sew a few cool patches on them, or iron them on to make them special.

That is an interesting idea! How about stretching the tights to her size, putting the outside ankle location in a hope to maintain the stretch? I bet a small (smaller than a quarter) flower, butterfly or animal would look lovely. I would probably hand stitch the design to avoid my machine getting both sides of the tights.

feather, I'd love to see what you decide to do (I might copy it )

I would guess that due to the stretch you would need to find a "stretchy" applique, embroidery or lace for it to work. If your embellishment doesn't stretch, it will ruin the fit and/or tear the fabric due to not stretching. It sounds like a fun project so I hope you can make it work.

What I was struggling with, was the stretchiness, and they are leggings not so much like nylons. I decided on buttons. But the buttons are wood and I'm worried they won't make it through the wash. I ended up with buttons, and I may coat them in polyurethane and just sew them on the outer seam at the bottom of the leg. I looked for plastic/resin type buttons but they aren't as pretty as the wood ones. So the buttons come on Sunday and I'll take pics when I'm done. Thank you for all the thoughts on this.
