I have some of those old glass canning lids: the flat ones that are held down by a metal ring. The lids have rust stains on them. I've tried soaking them in hot water with dish detergent, but the brownish marks remain. I have a little collection of old jars, and thought I'd try to match up exact brands. Any thoughts on cleaning those marks off? Thanks.

Toilet bowl cleaner usually takes off rust but I wouldn't get that stuff on the metal parts as it might corrode them.

You can use a fine Brillo or similar metal pad to rub the stain off. Rust happened from storing in a damp basement, possibly over many years. Ccanners were not concerned since it's on the outside and not in contact with the food. Thus no special care was taken to avoid it.
