Our chickens love the sunflower seeds that pop up out in the yard from the bird feeders...I often pull them and feed them to them....

They like to have a perch. It can be six inches off the ground, but they will sit on the perch rather than the ground. If they are on a perch, you can put a row of straw underneath to catch the poop and make their living arrangements more sanitary.

Two birds are sitting on a perch and one says to the other, "I smell fish".

My hens like their warm mash in the morning. Kitchen scraps, a little milk and oats heated on the wood stove. They like me to open the door so they can go outside, unless it is cold and/or raining hard....James

I can tell you what makes them happy!!! My spoiled chicken in the garage has to have breakfast each morning,or she won't speak to me!! Doesn't have to be special, scrambled egg, salad, cooked anything, and she is a chatter box. Until she gets that, she just stares at me. Me..her trained human!

Please people! Y'all are just encouraging this behavior. Feather needs a joke intervention.

Not a pun, but yesterday I was teaching the boys to make rice pudding. When teaching them how to temper the eggs my 9 year old started talking in a fake "mean voice" (that was funny in itself!) to the egg, milk, rice mixture.

I'd say all of my chickens are very happy today. It is actually a tad over 50° and this was the first day in a coon's age that I was able to let them outside. Of course they are penned and not free-ranging as usual - but that is to protect them from the hungry hawks this time of year. At each coop, when I started fiddling with the lock and talking to them - you could hear the ruckus inside as everyone was running towards the door! It made me smile... because they were... soooo eggcited!!! ~Mari

mealy worms and they get lots of treats. Winter I sprout wheat in a clear plastic container and when it's about 2", cut off the plastic top and it will be gone by afternoon.

I agree that chickens hanging out in the dust, sunning themselves and chatting like a bunch of pepperpots, is what makes them happy.
Or are they expressing their happiness through dust bathing?
The other day, the pups and two kids were hanging out in the dust bath with 6 or 7 of the chooks. Only wish I'd brought the camera out with me. Too precious!

This time of year it's the new spring grass. Every day I pull a bucket full and give it to the 5 week old pullets that I have inside and it didn't take them long to discover that grass is the equivalent of chicken gold!
