Ok so I'm super excited! We just got new chicks. We had chickens several years ago and they were our pets. They were so tame, they would follow you every where you went trying to help with whatever it was you were doing. One would always walk 2 houses down to visit the neighbors when they were outside. The lady would then walk our chicken home LOL. They loved being held and pet. Sadly the neighbors dogs across the street got ahold of 3 of them and killed them. The remaining one would not make it alone so I gave her to a good home where she would have other chicken friends. I always wanted more and now we have 4 new babies. We got 2 Rhode island reds and 2 black sex links. As soon as we got home I set up their area and put them in, They are running around, chirping, eating, drinking, scratching and trying to figure out the dust bathing thing. They seem very happy. Here are some pics, sorry they are not the best.

They’re so adorable! I don’t know all that much about chickens, but I can tell you my girl did. She had one New Hampshire Red (Loretta) and two Golden Comets, (Mabel & Louise). The comets died within 3 years. Loretta, the New Hampshire Red lived 5 more years alone in the coop and was 8 when she died about 3 months ago. She did great alone in winters too with the heat lamp.
Loretta was my daughters “pet chicken”. She would follow Megan wherever she went, would come when she whistled & shook the treat jar. She was such a sweet chicken. She was also very beautiful, as far as chickens go.
I wish you many happy years with your new chicks.🐥🐥🐥
I didn’t know there was a Long Island Red & we live on Long Island 🧐

LOVE them. We currently have 4 adults w/names. When loose, knock on our front door. I informed my husband we needed a few more...he could decide 4 or 6. I know what kind, just waiting...maybe Easter chicks?!

Oh Woodpecker, I didn't know that you lost Loretta! Must have happened while I was absent from here for awhile. I'm so sorry! Congrats on the new chicks, merks. I hope yours are smarter than the Leghorns I've got. They are almost 4 weeks old now and still not very bright, even for chickens! Enjoy!

countrymom22, Even though Loretta was my daughters pet chicken...I really miss her. She lived a good life for 8 years here. Alone 5 winters with her heat lamp in the coop. I was just thinking yesterday if Loretta was still here, there's so much action around here, building wise, she wouldn't be able to go out much. They're STILL working on the Mini Mcmansion next door- 2 yrs. 7 months and they knocked down 3 other old homes and are converting them all. We're not supposed to have chickens here, so it was and would be so difficult to let her outside etc. I believe Megan has her with her in Heaven

Woodpecker , I'm sorry to hear about Loretta, I remember hearing stories about her. countrymom22 , LOL I'm sure they will get smarter with age. dw , Congrats! What kind did you get? So our babies are about 5 weeks old now, They were getting to big for the brooder so I had to move them into their coop. DH swore up and down we would never put a heat lamp in the coop last time, but this time he was so sweet and secured one in there for the girls! They finally have names too! We have Perch, Marty, Queen Ann and Biscuit. Also there is a great form that I'm on called www.backyardchickens.com/ the people there are very friendly and it's a very active site where there is so much information.

A variety: Lakenvelder, Partridge rock, 2 aracaunas, black star, ancona...these will be added to our 2 barred rocks, red star & Rhode Island red rooster. They are really pets and have names. My husband is working on the names for the new ones.
