I've heard about this but first time we've experienced it. My 3rd time Momma had two doelings 10 days ago. Everyone is doing fine - she is a very very attentive Mom. It seems however both girls are feeding from one side and leaving the other. At first I thought something might be wrong so I went ahead and milked out some from that side and did a mastitis test - all good. Then I thought maybe it had gotten too engorged for them to latch on so I milked it mostly out - next day same thing. I've latched each girl onto that side and they will drink just fine - Momma is in no distress when I milk or I put them on that side and they feed, so I can't think that side is painful. Another few days and they'll be separated from Mom at night, I'll milk in the morning and put everyone back together again. Maybe it'll work itself out, just seems weird.
Any ideas of something I should be doing differently or looking for that I may have missed?

When kids have a preferred teat, I tape off the other one until they figure out that both sides have the same product.
The mechanics of it are to tape off the over-used side. Wait 12-24 hours, then pull the tape. If they start using both sides, great. If not, lather, rinse, repeat.
Are you milking, or are these meat goats?

@pony, Thanks. These are Nubian dairy and I'm milking her OAD, in the morning. The kids are separated from Mom overnight and they get a bottle first thing in the morning, we milk Mom and then everybody plays together for the day. I've tried taping the preferred teat, but haven't yet found the right solution to keeping it on. The good news however, is that as the kids are growing they are drinking more so they seem to be evening out the teat usage on their own. I am going to have to master that taping thing at some point though. this is the way I'm trying, but they are better at taking off the tape than I am at putting it on :-) link

I don't know what type of tape you're using, but I use the paper bandaging tape. I use three or four strips, two the long way (top to bottom and up again), and one or two wrapped around the teat in a spiral. So far, I've not had anyone get the tape off. Bandaging was always my strong suit when I was a vet tech.
