Thanks you guys. It's been tough; I just lost one of my cats a couple of weeks ago and now this. I'm pretty gobsmacked. Wow girl, you definitely didn't need any more grief in your life. I'm so sorry to hear that - I know how you guys feel about your cats. (We are really close to ours - they are like kids). Prayers and good thoughts for peace and comfort in the coming days. Ya'll take care now. ~Mari

Thanks so much, Mari. You are so very welcome willowgirl... I do hope that things are going better on your end and that you are feeling less and less hurt and are remembering the good times you have had with Ivy and your cat. You take care now, ~Mari

I'm sorry, willowgirl, both for the loss of Ivy and your kitty. We do get so attached to our critter kids, don't we. It was really interesting to see the pics you and Numb posted...I've never heard of thimble toe or seen it, and I grew up with cattle. I was picturing something more like a horse hoof crack, so the pics were really an eye opener.

So very sorry to hear about Ivy. We had a cow go down similarly, we are almost certain she slipped in mud and broke her spine toward the rear of her topline. It was so sad, she was about 6 months pregnant at the time.
I'm also sorry to hear about your sweet kitty. My heart goes out to you at this sad time willow girl.

Thank you! I don't know if she could have injured herself just going into the parlor, but then cows do some pretty weird stuff sometimes. It was just awful watching her suffer and not being able to do anything to help her. After the seizure(?) passed she was responsive again and while I was milking, I'd call her name and talk to her, and she'd cock an ear in my direction, so I could tell she was listening. I wanted so much to be able to help her, poor baby. She was the sweetest little cow you could ask for, and a good milker, too. I went back through the records and found that the only heifer calf she ever had was the one born in July, a pretty little thing. I think my boss must have bred Ivy to a red bull. I named the calf Fiona and I've been spending a couple minutes with her every day, training her up so she'll be friendly like her momma. Maybe she'll have better luck and I'll be able to take her home someday.
