I know this will be hard to believe but given the choice between 8 lbs of cheese curds and a veggie pasta salad the potluck people want veggie pasta salad. So I'll figure that out by the middle of June. There will still be cheese curds but for DH's son's family.
I'm thinking, in our situation, Dh's family, whole grain pasta and for color, bean or rice pastas, then veg: roasted sweet potatoes (orange), red bell peppers and yellow bell peppers diced, broc and cauli, in small trees, quickly blanched just beginning to soften, softened carrot slices, red/black/white beans of some sort. Sauce: cashew/white bean/lemon/seasonings, sauced. Then Dh can eat to his heart's content (pun intended). There are a couple health nuts posting marathons and bike racing, so we won't be alone.
1. So when you go to a potluck, what do you like the most? 2. What is your favorite dish to bring?
For me: 1. I used to like cheesy potato dishes, now I'd like fresh fruit or veg. 2. I used to do a fresh fruit salad with a clear purple glaze, made of sweet blue/purple berries and some gelatin to give it some body.
What do you like and what do you like to bring? Do you like potlucks?

At potlucks, I generally look down the lineup and hope someone brought an asian broccoli slaw. For what I bring, we have a potluck every Thursday with our church small group. I try to bring something the group will enjoy - which generally means it's not something we would eat a lot of . I tried bringing 'healthy foods' but I hate to spend time and energy to make something only to have it sit on the table - therefore I usually bring a dessert. I'm known for peanut brittle that doesn't break your teeth, carmel corn, meringue cookies and goat milk fudges.

My fav pot luck dish?
Desserts! I haven't met one I don't like.
What I bring?
Depends on the pitch in. I usually volunteer for dessert. I work in the industry, and items that are not kept to temp freak me out!! lol

I see nothing wrong with that--that you are freaked out if things aren't kept at safe temperatures. What are the rules? Over 140 deg F for hot dishes, under 40 deg F for cold dishes. Between 40 and 140 deg F, 2 hours max. Right?

I adore pot lucks! A little of this, a little of that, might find a new favorite, might enjoy an old favorite. SO much fun!
We do a potluck once a month at church. I usually bring two crockpots of something ("bring enough for your family plus one") and a dessert. For our coming up one I'm bringing chili dog casserole and a carrot cake.
For family get-togethers I try to plan around favorite dishes or the theme, for lack of a better word... Mexican, Italian, whatever holiday it is, etc.

I love pot luck. People usually bring something they are proud of. What I bring depends on the circumstances. I usually do not bring a hot dish because I live to far. I make cookies ahead of time and freeze them, then I can just grab some from the freezer. Shortbread is good for this, as are oatmeal chocolate chip. I might bring a pie. In the summer I sometimes bring potatoes salad. If we are going far, I put a bag of ice in a zip lock on top.

Haven't been to a potluck in 30 years or more. We used to, once a summer with relatives. Just 2 brothers left. 1, I haven't seen since Mom's passing, was never married. The other I just can't eat the food from their filthy kitchen.
I like a hamburger and potato salad.
We usually took fruit salad with jelly/yogurt mix to dress.
DS and we eat many meals together outside at campfire or outdoor kitchen. Tacos (fish especially) are a favorite, full meal in hand. Fish and slaw in a warm corn shell. In season fruit crisp hot from the bean pot for dessert....James

Oh my gosh, I just LOVE potlucks. I get to try foods I normally wouldn't. I love the variety. Yeah, that's what I love the most about pot lucks - VARIETY. Of course, I also absolutely love food.
What's my favorite dish to bring? That depends on who's having the potluck. If it's dh's family, we wouldn't be allowed in if we didn't bring pickles. We are the only ones who still make the pickles my in-laws made, so we HAVE to bring them. In quantity. Preferably a number of jars of them, so people can take home a jar. And if it's Christmas time, pecan fingers are also a must. Weird combination, pickles and pecan fingers but whatever.
For my side, if it's the "bring an appetizer" get together, some sort of dip (jalapeno popper dip, Buffalo chicken dip) and usually caprese skewer appetizers (cherry tomatoes, mozzarella cheese and basil with a balsamic glaze). For something more substantial, bruciuluni (a Sicilian meat dish of sirloin steak rolled around breadcrumbs, cheese and hard boiled eggs and cooked in spaghetti sauce). My Sicilian grandmother made it, but she did not share the recipe (believe me, I tried to get her to teach me. No luck). I found a recipe online that sounded like hers, and my brothers were both stunned - as in, "How did you get Grandma to give you here recipe?" I didn't. Oh, and if it's Christmas? Pecan fingers there too. I hate making them but everyone loves eating them. Luckily my grandson loves to make pecan fingers so I think I'll hire him next holiday season.
Before I retired, deviled eggs were my pot luck go to, and I'd hear about it if I didn't bring them. I mean, sometimes I wanted to bring something else. I learned I was welcome to bring an additional dish, but the deviled eggs were a must.

Wife is finishing off her dishes for a Mexican-themed potluck at church today. Chicken and black bean burritos with green chili sauce, along with a Mexican chocolate cake.
Going to be some good eatin' in the neighborhood....

snoozy, I love the recipe and the tender loving care you take with the garlic and chilis. What a nice combination of spices and flavors.

My current go-to is Black Bean Salad. It's quick, easy, and healthy! Black beans, bell peppers (prettier if you use multiple colors), and red onion. Dressing is olive oil, lime juice, cumin, and a little salt & pepper. Fresh parsley or cilantro is a nice addition, but my herb garden is just now getting to the point I can harvest more than a few leaves.
My other potluck go-to is a 9x13 of mac & cheese. Can't go wrong with that! And last year I bought a insulated carrier, so I can keep it warm.

I like to make a BIG slow cooker full of baked beans..... Several kinds of canned beans, browned hamburger, bacon bits, and a sweet tangy sauce.
Always have had the kettle come home empty.

I’m always required to make an apple 🥧. Also, I’m always asked to bring my mothers recipe for potato salad, which never tastes as good as hers.
Mother rarely had a real recipe she followed...just a pinch of this, a lot of that. . It makes it hard to duplicate. The only recipes she did follow were from her Weight Watcher cook book. I still have it here at home.
