Nice article. Never seen the chinkapin but had a sawing job about ten years ago in the Ohio River valley and the guy had 4-5 American chestnut cut. Only 12-14 inches in diameter. There are still some in the wild. The wood was green! Very strange!
The hybrid he is talking about is the Dungston chestnut. It will only get to about half the height and diameter of the American but it maintains the large nut size of the Chinese chestnut which makes up the 1/16th. I would be planting some if I thought I would live long enough to enjoy them but at 69, well not practical. besides, I do enjoy my Chinese chestnuts that I have here in the front yard! Wade
