I have a steel trash barrel. On the sides are 3/8 inch slits. This morning one of those slits is now a 4 inch rough square. Inside the barrel was a bag within a bag that had a spoiled , moldy bone that was 3 or more inches across. The bag was partially pulled through the hole, the bag the bone was in was on the ground, and no bone. Neither bag was ripped. I see neither claw or tooth marks on the barrel . This hole is 2ft above ground.
In the garden at a compost pile, it has been dug into also. The pile is dirt and ready to be spread on the garden. This is not the digging style of armadillo, squirrel or skunk. There are no paw print near garden ot barrel to identify.

When I found the damage to my barrel I was walking my pups. I went back out and checked more closely. Inside the barrel on the walls are a number of 1/2 $ size tracks. The pad is almost round with 4 toes not as long as the pad. Not 5 toes but 4 on each track.
And the slits are the with of a saw blade..probably a sawsall.

Yes feather, I have looked at that chart and others. The thought has come to mind that perhaps this creature is deformed since it has only 4 instead of 5 toes. There is only a fine line between the toes and pad.

I am thinking it might be a coon. I do not know coon habits but I have seen a sow and babies cross the road near here.
