Not that I'm interested in selling commercially - but a lot of people tell me I should sell my soap - um, NO! But then I went to my local health food store and noticed they didn't have any goat milk soap. (They were probably sold out!) I mentioned this to my husband and he said I would be opening myself up for a law suit. I just want to get rid of some of the stuff I have so I can make more! forgot to add - Has anyone had an adverse situation occur with selling?

The last time I looked at liability insurance for selling soap it was running about $500/yr. That's a big investment if this is a hobby/small business. I have had no adverse affects personally with the few I sell.
I fill out my gift giving with soap, and I use it as a barter item.

Do you have a farm insurance policy (instead of just house insurance)? If so check with your agent to see if you already have product liability.

Well that nips that in the bud!! Guess I have to keep giving my first ones a way - I have to practice! Thanks, at least I'll know what I need to do if it would ever get to that point.

Soap liability insurance costs more than my malpractice insurance?
We live in a crazy world...

That is crazy you would need any insurance for soap. What is the world coming too?

I have never personally looked into the RLI insurance, but IIRC from what I've seen posted, it is very reasonable, ~$100/year.
Before I was covered under our farm insurance in 2002, I never kept insurance for my soap products. I've been soaping since 1999 and have never had one person have a bad reaction from my soaps.

I would also interject here that I will never wholesale my soap. When a bigger guy than you can come after you for what they perceive is a "problem", you could lose everything. I sell on my website, to friends and family...friends of friends, etc. Eventually, once we get moved, I will sell at the Farmer's Market. I was approached by a local "farm store" to sell there. Declined.....just didn't feel "right".

If you want to sell excess, sell to someone who wants to give it away as gifts. Christmas time is good, let word out before Thanksgiving. Soap is a great gift for teachers, librarians, people you aren’t intimate with. You don’t want to earn a living with it, just get rid of excess and this would be a good way.
