I always knew our kitty Merlin was special (hence the name;he's a wise one, haha) but only this year researched his coat color! I knew I'd never had a dark cat with white underfur but only looked it up a few months ago. It's called "black smoke" and is fairly rare (at least in mutts, lol. I saw the most pictures in Egyptian Mau breed so maybe it's in his ancestry). His leg really shows the contrast well in this pic. Here is with one of our "normal" coated tabby cats (when Zephyr was a baby and followed Merlin everywhere to learn from him).

They’re very handsome. I had two cats, after I left home when young. My best Mickey looked like Zephyr. He lived until 13 yrs. old. He was honestly my best friend, while living alone in my apartment. He would greet me every morning and wait for me when I got home from work. Too sweet❤️He would sit with me wherever I sat...a good friend.
After the children were born, we first got our beautiful dog, Cooper. Great dog. When he passed, the children wanted a cat. Well, wouldn’t you know it, we found a 2 month old cat at a shelter, he looked just like the my old Mickey. Hence, his name was Mickey too. He was a good boy.
I bet those two snuggle up to you, too! They’re really very handsome....thanks for sharing xo

We had an orange tabby - very unusual in that SHE was a female. Orange Tabby is a sex-linked gene, so they normally are males. And she had a litter of kittens for us!

Calicos are female...or are they ? The one calico male I saw was mean.

Orange tabby's are sex linked male and calicos are female. Never saw one that didn't follow these rules.
But then again, there are lot of things in this world that wouldn't surprise me!

We had an orange tabby female once, but it is much more common for the gingers to be male. We have 3 full brothers from 2 different litters. The older two are orange tabbies, 1 mackerel and 1 classic, and the younger brother is a beautiful flame point, complete with blue eyes. I'd love to know the genetics of these 3. BTW, my bff has 3 full siblings to mine and my nephew has 2 more. All spayed/neutered, as that poor mama who had 3 litters in a year should have been!

hobbitlady, your black smoke is gorgeous, as is your silver tabby. Beautiful boys.
