Anybody else here plant Carola Potatoes? This was our third year and we love the flavor but yield hasn't been what I would have liked and this year they were the most misshapen things I ever dug up. I'm just looking for a bit of feedback from someone else familiar with them. Guess we'll probably go back to Yukon Golds next year.

I grow Carolas. They are my favorite. What do you fertilize with?

I grow Carolas. They are my favorite. What do you fertilize with? Not a good question because I don't have a good answer. This year, we put them in a "new" garden area, which hadn't been used for garden for several years and they were not fertilized at all. The last couple of years my family took care of the garden, using some fertilizer they had and I honestly do not know what that was. Other potatoes planted near them did fine but the Carolas were what I really wanted. The good flavor is still there but we got a lot of oddly-shaped potatoes that couldn't be peeled, or even easily scrubbed clean. Grrrrrr. I'd begun to wonder if they were just prone to peculiarities of this sort. What do you use for fertilizer?

I keep up with soil testing and add appropriate amounts of rock phosphate and greensand the autumn before planting and compost in the spring. I hill twice and then mulch with straw to keep soil moisture even. I don’t have the odd-shaped potatoes with Carolas but did when I tried growing Yellow Finns. That was strange because they were growing right beside the Carolas.

Vickilynn, We also hill twice and then mulch with straw. Thanks for your input. I guess we'll try them one last time but I sure won't expect to have my main crop from them!
