I have decided to cook my way through THE PRAIRIE HOMESTEAD COOKBOOK as Julie did in the movie. But I will be mixing and matching recipes, not doing all the baking in one month or all the sides in one month. Many of the recipes are simple but have added zingers, or use ingredients we just don't use (lard, lots of butter). I will make switches as needed but started this week with MAPLE OAT SANDWICH BREAD. It is truly outstanding and the only change I would make next time is to drop the cinnamon to .75 tsp and a little less maple syrup (although I LOVE the recipe as is).
I cannot post pics here as I don't have any account that allows it but if someone wants to do so who is on FB (feather , and others), I would post them there.
The cookbook is truly fun to read and contains a way of life I have been adopting slowly.... since 2003 with a dead stop period from 2009-2014 when we got transferred to downtown Chicago. I don't think we will be raising cattle or even chickens but since I live 25 miles away from the nearest store, I can get really fresh meat/poultry from neighbors anytime.
Not advocating you buy the cookbook but if you are interested, here is the link. NOTE: IT goes on sale for about $16-$17 often on Amazon as my DD#1 got it for me at that price in June. Now it seems high. She also gives out all the recipes on the website (and they are searchable), just not in one place like a cookbook. www.theprairiehomestead.com/the-prairie-homestead-cookbook

Cool project! If you are on facebook, you can set your privacy of your pictures to 'public' and then post them here, as they are hosted by facebook. Capisce?

feather Yes I know that but I deliberately don't have my Facebook public. I don't want former clients to be able to look me up. I am not versed on their cases anymore and that is the first thing that happens when you have a public Facebook page and you have ongoing cases. However I'm not sure how you got a copy of it and got it here… 😂😬Are you able to take it from my page and put it here? If so I can post what I cooked today which we just finished eating and was awesome. The cookbook is quite good. It seems simple but the underlying flavors are amazing. We could do a summary of pictures that weeks' end. But that seems like a lot of work for you. I deliberately didn't put what I was doing on the private Homestead & Heritage Cooking FB site on my Facebook other than that first post. I didn't think people would be interested every day or four times a week.

solargeek, yes. If you want me to take the picture down I can do that. I don't think there is a way to follow the code back to your fb. It doesn't have your name in the code. I also don't know why the picture shows up here, except maybe pictures aren't protected by 'private' or 'friends only', or maybe no one can see it unless they are your fb friend? Not sure about that. Can everyone see the picture? I can do a plain copy paste of the location of the picture, as easy as you can, to put it here. Just let me know what you want me to do, and I'll do it. But don't ask me to walk fast or stand on my head, I'm no good at those things.

It seems like you may probably travel to meet up with relatives or do some entertaining. If you are baking bread, you might like this jarred bruschetta in a jar for on the bread. They are saying the vinegar becomes very mild after 2 months. I thought you might like it for winter. www.freshpreserving.com/bruschetta-in-a-jar-br1078.html

feather, I made some 2 years ago but it did not mellow enough for us. So I have not made that recipe since. I use sundried tomatoes to make a pesto that I freeze in cubes and then use a cube (or many) as the base of: fresh sauce - just add tomatoes; pesto sauce; soups when tomate paste is called for; chilis and on. But the vinegar was just too strong even this year without adding more fresh tomatoes which to me defeats the purpose.

I've been greatly enjoying this the last few days: Homemade whole wheat pita (toasted in toaster) Smeared with Bruschetta Topped with Chickpea salad That topped with a little premade salad for the week (lettuce, cabbage, carrots, green pepper) Truly yum

solargeek, thanks for the introduction to this book! I'd never heard of it, but after reading about it on Amazon and hearing your raves, I ordered it. It looks awesome! There aren't many out there that work so well for people in my lifestyle. This one looks like a good fit. It should arrive next week. Have you seen Eve Kilcher's cookbook? I can't remember the name, but I remember seeing a fabulous loaf of bread on the Thanksgiving table on the show. When I saw that the bread was in the cookbook, I had to buy it. It turns out to be a savory nettle bread, baked in a cast iron pot, and it's incredible. I gather nettle here for teas, and really enjoy the bread. It makes awesome toast, too. Tim Horton, have you checked out Amazon? I don't recall the currency differences, but I don't think I paid anywhere near $45. And they also offer used books at a huge discount. It might be worth your time and money.

Amazon and other places run sales on this cookbook. The next time she posts that it's on sale, I will notify you. You can get a lot if not all of the recipes on her website ThePrairieHomestead.com It's annoying to have to look them all up, but they're free! She also has canning recipes that are excellent. I have used almost all of her canning recipes because she fully requires compliance with all the safety codes. Even better are her posts on her Facebook page by the same name on Facebook or her YouTube channel which I don't watch but everyone else does.
