Our local news carried a story Saturday night about an accidental shooting in the next county where one guy mistook his 20 y/o hunting partner for a deer and shot him in the hip. He'll survive.
Yesterday at noon, there was another story about an accidental shooting in northeast Missouri where one hunter mistook another for a deer. The victim was shot in the head and he did not survive. The shooter was the 17 year old boy's grandfather and I don't know how in the world that poor man, the whole family, will ever deal with the tragedy.
Neither who was shot was wearing the required by law orange. I think there's even specifics about how much orange you need to wear.
To reduce fire danger this winter, DH is mowing the last sections of our pasture today where the goats couldn't get to it. He's driving a big, noisy red tractor but he's got on an orange cap.
Hunters, ya'll be careful out there. Know what you are shooting at. Know what's behind it. Wear your orange vest and cap. If you hunt with a group, be sure you know where all are stationed (we hunt from stands on our farm). If you are going out alone, let someone know where you'll be and when you plan to come home. Use a harness to keep you on your stand. Load your gun only when you are safely on your stand and ready to hunt. If there's anything I forgot, please feel free to add your comments.

It happens every year! Thanks for the reminder.
As a side, the events or at least one of them that brought on the "hunter orange" rules was another tragic Shooting. A hunter saw a crow in a tree and killed it. It was a hunter wearing a black hat. So sad, but those things happen. Wade

They take it very seriously here. From DNR courtesy of Farm and Fleet Hunter Orange: Wisconsin During firearm deer hunting season, all Wisconsin hunters (except those hunting waterfowl) have to wear hunter orange above the waste. 50 percent of their above-the-waist clothing must be blaze orange or fluorescent pink. Camoflauge blaze orange is also legal to wear as long as 50 percent of the clothing is blaze orange. Ground blinds are required to have at least 144 square inches of solid blaze orange, visible from all directions. You can easily meet this requirement with a blaze orange safety cap for your blind

When working in the yard, or just walking from our backdoor to our garage or car, we will wear blaze orange. We wear blaze orange outdoors everyday during hunting season even when we're not hunting.
