I have got to get a move on with soap making. It's what I give at Christmas. Most people love my soap, and it is so much easier than shopping. I think I will use orange essential oil this year. Orange is a Christmas smell, since that is what we got in our stockings many years ago. Orange and pine- mmmmm.

Maura, how big of a batch do you usually make for Christmas? I was just thinking, we usually make so much, we have enough for 3 years, but it does start degrading after 2 years, a little discoloration of the white soaps or drying/cracking. It will still work (for us) but it's not quite as nice as fresh soap. Fresh soap has its own clean smell which I enjoy.

Sweetie made some candles a few years ago using orange with a hint of cinnamon. We really liked them for the holidays so me makes soap the same now. Sweetie makes holiday soap the same time as she makes her shortbread so it can set and mellow before Christmas time. We just got it done before my surgery....James

I need to get more made, too. Our busy holiday season has already started.

The size of the batch depends on the size of the lye. So, it has changed over the years. 12 oz lye, 18 oz lye, 16 oz lye. I use a percentage off the lye.
