I have a field jacket I would like to replace the zipper on. It's European so is left-handed and it's also a very small zipper.
Any idea of what the going cost would be to replace the zipper? the jacket only cost me $12, so I don't want to spend a lot,
but I really like this jacket.

I can't answer your question however, buying a new heavy duty, separating, metal jacket zipper is likely to run you between $10-$15. From there, you're paying labor/skill -- someone to remove the current zipper and sew in the new one. If you don't know someone that sews, you could call a local dry cleaner - they often have a couple of capable folks they know that can repair clothing. If that doesn't work, you can call a local fabric store and ask them if they can recommend someone.

I had a long, two-way zipper replaced in an Eddie Bauer parka for $38. Absolutely worth it. Heavy-duty parka with faux-fur edged hood. If I had a jacket like yours that I really loved, I'd put the same $ into it. I'd be able to do a zipper myself, but they have sewing machines intended to go through all those layers.

I have domestic machines that would sew through those layers. I agree on calling a dry cleaner.

Thanks, everyone.
I guess I will hit up a dry cleaner next time I am in town.

You might be able to just replace the slide, if the teeth are ok. I think JoAnnes or other fabric stores carry the slides or you can probably get them from Amazon.

mollymckee, Thanks for the info... I have no idea how the zipper made it into military clothing. The teeth and slider are so small and fragile, there is no way I could zip it with gloves on.

Lowest bidder.
I've replaced a boatload of zippers but no longer have a machine that will handle dense fabrics in multiple layers. Otherwise, I would have offered.

I'm late to this zipper party, but if you haven't found a fix yet it really doesn't have to be too hard. DH had a Carhart jacket that had been worn literally to pieces but hadn't hit the trash can yet. He also had an inexpensive lined flannel jacket that he really liked but the nylon zipper gave out. I pulled the heavy metal zipper out of the Carhart and put it into the flannel. Turned out good and THAT zipper will now outlast a second coat.
