My top 2 have arrived (Seed Savers and Baker Creek). I think Hubs accidentally pitched the Fedco. *sigh* What are your 'must haves' this year? What didn't work well for you last year? I'm trying to be more 'intentional' about my ordering this year, but they make it so hard! If I got everything I wanted, I would need more than my 5 acres. I do think I will make part of the plan for the year to sell some of the seedlings to offset the cost of the seeds.

So far, only my Totally Tomatoes has arrived. Waiting for Baker Creek as I dearly love that one. In our house, we refer to it as Grandma's Garden Porn.

Haven't gotten a seed catalog in years. Have picked up a few free seed packets at the produce giveaway last couple years. Save seed and propagate from cuttings. Old favorites for fresh use plus 1 or 2 things to can. Tomatoes for sure. Minimum garden, hoops for just 4 raised beds now, little 4 season greenhouse and a tiny plot. Big changes in what we can eat the last 2 years. What used to be quarts are now pints and 1/2 pints. We are planning to be out in our "new" for us "camper" this summer, thinking our last "trip". Central/eastern Washington, northern Idaho, Montana. Then stay closer to home. Lots of changes coming. This surgery, not able to get around much on crutches anymore. Down sizing even more, one years worth of canned goods, and this years, instead of 5 years. Need for stash of backup for the backup has gotten pretty small, backup is enough, long range has gotten shorter. The whole circle of life has gotten smaller, less food needed, fewer animals, less garden, less work. Move to cottage? Not wanting to move a lot....James

I've ordered from Seed Savers online, but have not had a garden in three of years. They sent me a catalog. Must make decisions. Must make decisions. Hopefully will be moving to a new place and will have to try out varieties to see what does best. Can't wait.

Seed Savers, Oikos Tree Crops, and Prairie Moon. Going to containers this year, not fighting quackgrass and thistles anymore.

Oh, I have gotten paw paw trees from OIkos. They did not do well. I think we are too far north.

Oh, I have gotten paw paw trees from OIkos. They did not do well. I think we are too far north. Mine didn't fare well either. From what I've read they are an understory tree when very small and cannot take a lot of sun until older. I tried them pre-internet so maybe I'll give them another shot now that I'm aware of that little nugget. Other plants from them have done well. In fact we picked our first buartnuts this year, a walnut cross that has a bit of a hickory nut flavor to it. Very tasty!

So far, only Fedco and Southern Exposure but they are the really dangerous one's for me. I get things for the hoop houses and winter growing from Fedco and my open spring and summer gardens from Southern Exposure. My best purple hull pea source is Wilhite down in Texas.
I've never heard of Oikos but will look them up. Like jwal, our long range is getting shorter so we may not have time here to plant more trees.

I like seeds and plants that are adapted to here. I don't buy plants from catalogs for that reason. Trees are best propagated for a very small micro-climate. I graft my own or just a limb or two as I don't need full trees of 1 variety. Lots of cannery crops here so I plant the same as they do. Many times I get a little free seed from them or the farmer planting them....James

Geeeee, I haven't received any catalogs as of yet! I am waiting with bated breath in regards to Baker's Creek I must say - what eye candy! I am planning on ordering the heck out of sunflowers this year - can't wait!! (Among other things) For what it is worth - which probably ain't much - yeah, it seems to me the PawPaw does much better as an understory tree. We have never planted them but we have many on our property and since we have lived here - they seem to be flourishing in some areas - and we have one such area that does indeed has a lot of younger trees. This pic is facing south and our narrow driveway within the woods is just off to the right. You can obviously see the young'uns in the foreground and the more mature ones in the background... We have bigger ones on the west side of our yard which doesn't get too terribly much sun since it is just a large open area in the woods which accommodates our septic field... I always thought that Michigan was the PawPaw state - or perhaps I am incorrect and am thinking of the city/town named PawPaw... Perhaps in future I will do some research and find out if there would be a way that I could share seeds/cuttings and whatnot... ~Mari

I had paw paw trees in Ok and they were definitely understory trees. I had to beat the possums to the fruit every year or get none.

Last week was the week of the seed catalogs. I think I got six of them in the mail.
About the only thing I buy from the catalog anymore is Provider snapbean seed. All other seed I save or source locally from the feed stores. The feed stores are much cheaper and have varieties that work well here.

By the time you buy seed, start them, and babysit them. I found it is way cheaper to purchase seedlings local.

The 2-3 (?) garden seed catalogs that came and went to the wood furnace. Sweetie saying she has all the seeds she needs for the next several years. She was given a big box of garden seeds when someone cleaned out grandmas house. There must have been 200 or more unopened packages. The open packages and all the loose seeds go to the edge of the pasture as "sacrificial" plants to keep the wild life out of the yard. That and our season only supports a smaller variety of things.
The couple nursery places we use are all online now. I have new last spring native fruit bushes out. Now the keep the bears from wallowing down the wire cages I put around them to keep the moose from browsing them off. Always one thing or another...
