Had our chimney inspected and cleaned before we started our first fire here 18 years ago. Have it swept every spring. Burn nothing but seasoned hardwood, no pine.
I can't imagine not getting the dog out first thing, but he instead retrieved his empty rifle. By the way, why would a rifle be empty?
He's lucky to have survived, it's a crying shame about the dog.

Too bad.. But nature is just that unforgiving.

After burning wood for nearly 50 years..I learned something new. The green Ash was diseased with the ash beetle and a fungus in the roots , so had it cut down and into firewood. Never burned Ash before , as Tom said hardwood ...oak and some hickory and elm.
I could not control my stove..a first. A fire in the chimney water finally put it out and no more ash.
Neighbor said Ash(all ash?)burns like kerosene. I believe it, first time I was ever frightened burning wood.
