I have to admit that its a breed I'm not familiar with. A local poultry farm is selling floor raised, 26 week old hens for 5 bucks each. Currently we have no chickens in the chicken house. We have had chickens for years so we have all that's needed to manage. Has anyone had any experience with these layers

I saw your post and was doing a little "Googling" as far as trying to find out exactly what they are. I wonder if they are actually pretty similar to ISA Browns? ~Mari

From what I've found tetra browns are a high brown egg producing bird. They can identify sex by color. They look like a rir, except the ends of the tail feathers are a white color. Guess we will find out as I'm picking the 12 hens up in the morning

Got all 12 of them home, they are locked into the chicken house. Fresh litter, feed and water available to them. Thought it best to keep them locked up until they are settled in. I'm thinking they should start laying quickly..lot people there getting birds today. Going to keep my eye open as the local university animal science unit occasionally sells cornish cross birds, around 4 weeks old for 50 cents each

Just checked on the new girls. They are getting settled in. Eating out of the feeder and have found the water That's good to hear. Hopefully they will get used to their new digs and start laying for you very soon. They sound very similar to Isa Browns to me. That is one breed that I will never have again! I had them two different times. The first time, I also had Black Sex Links and Ameraucanas. When they were all chicks - several of the Isa chicks would go around yanking on the feathers of whoever got close enough to them to do it. I got so tired of hearing the other chicks crying out in pain I finally rounded up the offenders and threw them in a large dog crate. I can't remember how long I kept them in there - funny thing was - they didn't do that to each other - go figure? I tried Isa Browns once more - this time it was just that one breed in a coop. I only had one chick that did that very same thing. 'Bout drove me nuts. That flock was on the flighty side. But boy oh boy do Isa Browns lay the eggs! My lay rates were incredible! But it was really interesting as far as their lifespan. They were not long lived at all. Now, my Isa Brown roo just passed away - he was 5 years and 8 months old. The hens, however, have been gone for years. Well, I guess I have rambled on long enough. I do hope that all goes well and you have good luck with your new girls. Take care, ~Mari

I have been looking back through my "chicken notebook" as of late. I started getting eggs out of my Isa Brown hens at one day short of 16 weeks... crazy, huh. ~Mari

I knew they were close to laying age but was not expecting next day delivery..lol >>> Congrats....
Our poor motley looking Isa Browns finely quit laying about 2 weeks or a bit more ago.. During the coldest of our cold weather so far.. Last Sunday, Ground Hog Day, we got 2 eggs.. The next day we got 1... Maybe it was our full size red and black hens that surprised us.. ?? No more since then, but there is always hope..

Another update, when I let the chickens out this morning, we had no eggs yet. The grandkids wanted check for eggs before lunch. They collected 12 eggs from 12 hens. These girls are egg machines, been averaging 9 or 10 a day. They earned their pellets and scratch today

2020-02-21.... Small up date.. Our poor Isa Browns, 11-12 of them, are averaging 4-5 eggs a day.. Not bad for weather, and all.
Sweetie has been putting them in her incubator for the last week or so, but last night, when she checked the temp was down to 40F... I suspect all is lost to this point, and it needs another thermostat, controller..

The girls let me down on Thursday and only gave me 11. Today I have collected 11 shortly after lunch. Going to keep a eye open for a isa brown rooster. And a incubator.
