Seems like a long time ago that we were all working on our blocks for Forum Quilt #5, yet that was just last winter! I don't know about you, but I am more than ready to dust off the sewing machine and create a block for this year's quilt. Maura, who was the winner in 2020, has provided us with some lovely fabric that will lend itself to all kinds of color combos and patterns. I can't wait to share it with everyone. As a refresher, and for any new members who want to join in, here's how this works: To each person who signs up, I will send a 12" square of fabric. Using that fabric, and any other fabrics you like, you will sew a quilt block of any pattern you desire, as long as it finishes at 12.5 inches square. Please wash and dry all fabrics you use (forum fabric has all ready been prewashed), but please do not use fabric softener.Mail your block back to me in time to arrive in my mailbox by May 1st to be eligible for the drawing. Please make sure to put enough postage on it, and allow about two weeks for delivery (really really hoping USPS will get faster this Spring). For each block received by the deadline, I will enter the name of the member who created it into the drawing, and then draw a winner at random after the deadline of May 1st. The winning name will be posted on this thread, so don't forget to check back to see if you might be the lucky winner! The person whose name is drawn at random will receive all the blocks.
The winner is responsible for supplying (either purchase or use stash fabric) four yards of fabric for the next forum quilt and must mail me that fabric. Once the new fabric has been received, I will send the winner the blocks they won, plus an extra yard of the forum fabric to use in finishing their quilt. Please sign up on this thread if you would like to join in on Forum Quilt #6. When you sign up please indicate if you would like to make 1 block or 2; if there is enough fabric I will send 2 pieces to each person who said they would like to make 2 blocks. Then, once you've signed up here, also message me your mailing info (name & address), even if you've participated in previous quilts; I want to make sure I'm sending fabric to the right places. Sign-ups will run through the end of this month (February). I will mail out fabric by March 1st. With the way the USPS has been wonky in the past year or so, I want to make sure there is tons of mailing time on both ends. Blocks will be due back to me by May 1st. Hopefully that gives everyone lots of sewing time and still allow about a few weeks for travels via USPS before the deadline.

If you want to coordinate your fabric with the forum fabric, it is made by Northcott and is in their Essence collection.

krisinmi, just a thought...if you don't get enough people to support a quilt but still want to do something - perhaps the project could become a table runner instead? Cancelling it because there's not enough people at this time interested, is ok with me too.

Cancelling it because there's not enough people at this time interested, is ok with me too. Truly, it's up to the winner to do what they want with the blocks: bed quilt, lap quilt, table runner, whatever. Let's see how much interest there is in the next week and if it's a low turnout, I'll postpone (unless those signed up don't mind winning a handful of blocks and lots of unsewn fabric).

I'll sew a block or two.

Okay, between the three of us that is 3 to 6 blocks. 4 blocks gets you a baby quilt for the car seat.

Oops, put this on the wrong thread.... Typed this up and it disappeared and then I put it in the wrong place...! I have never made a quilt but I DO sew and with YouTube I could do it. I also have a local friend that quilts. My biggest issue may be in getting coordinating fabric as the the closest fabric store is 2.5 hours away... So I'll take 2 squares and figure it out

I think we could now do a crib size. Or, larger if the person puts a blank square in between the blocks.
Lindym, you can order fabric online. A quarter yard is all you'd need. Or get an old cotton shirt from the thrift store and cut it up. With two colors you can make a 9 patch or 16 patch checkerboard.

Maura, mzgarden, lindym, I am planning to get fabric mailed out on Saturday morning. Hoping that most everyone will get it by the end of next week and will have lots of time to sew with it. lindym, if you have any all cotton scraps from your other sewing, you can use those rather than having to order fabric or make a special trip to the fabric store. I started out sewing clothes for my kids, and when I first began making quilt blocks for the forum quilts, alot of times I used leftover fabric that looked good with whatever the forum fabric was.

krisinmi, my I ask what color you are sending out?

Got the fabric today, and it's really pretty! I've been practicing making blocks out of whatever I could find, going to do a couple more before tackling the real thing, lol. Discovered that my cutting mat is missing, my fabric marker is dead and I'm not sure where all my fabric scraps hid themselves...

I'm assuming it is ok to send extra squares using the leftover forum fabric? I think I can do 4 total.

lindym, - great idea, thanks for the jog. I made a 3rd square with the scraps. I'll get them in the mail Saturday and then 'ka-boom' my sewing room will be a construction zone for a month as we retrofit the last 2 walls of our 130yo farm house with insulation (finally). Yikes.

mzgarden, I'm sure that a 130yo house has all sorts of issues, but I love architecture and old houses, so I'm envious! I really hope there will pictures of, at least, the blocks if not the completed quilt! I did some poking around and finally found some previous years quilts but some were on photo bucket and are missing.

What about -- if we all took pictures of the squares we've made and sent. And that way, if life gets in the way for the recipient, we could all put up our pictures of our square(s)?

I have pictures of all the squares from past swaps, just don't have a reliable way to post them since photo bucket stopped being free. If I put them on my FB page as public I can link to them, but I'd rather not do it that way. I really need to get a new account on a free photo hosting site.

I'm always up to learn something new. This was my first Joseph's Coat. I learned to be more careful and not mix the 10" pattern with the 12" pattern parts!

I had to look up Joseph's Coat to see what it looks like. *Jaw Drop* Wow. I typically try new patterns when making blocks for the forum quilts, but I'm definitely not tackling that one any time soon!!

Well, I only have to make it once.
Don't know if I could make enough for a full sized quilt. Not right now, anyway.

Received blocks from Billie in the mail. She is having connection issues and is unable to get on the forum to read or post.

mzgarden received your blocks. Somewhere in my stash I have that exact paisley fabric. Totally forgot about it until I saw your block! This is going to be a great quilt. I was a little worried, with only a handful of participants that the winner wouldn't get very many blocks. That isn't the case at all--we are currently sitting at 9 blocks received (counting two I've gotten sewn), with more yet to come!

krisinmi, thanks for letting me know they arrived. I love that paisley - might be one of my very favorite fabrics ever. I'm down to scraps but that's ok. Another will come along I'm sure.
