There are some cute ideas in that article. The one that caught my eye is the "paint your ceiling fan" one. We have high, vaulted ceilings and the most ugly ceiling fan (which came with the house). Due to how high up it is - and the fact that ugly or no, it really does move an incredible amount of air - we don't want to replace it. What I found most objectionable were the wicker-look blades that reminded me of an old straw hat, if you know what I mean. Last year by happy accident, I found that the blades we reversable. So instead of straw hat, I had fake wood look. Better, but still not great. It never occurred to me to PAINT the blades. I think that's just the change I need to make the fan look really good.

Yup, we had one of those cheesy "fake wood-look" blade fans in the front half of the living room. When we took it down to re-do the ceiling in there a couple of years ago, I painted the blades purple!

I'm leaning toward hunter green for the blades since we have a lot of dark green accent furniture. And oh yeah - I have a half full gallon can of hunter green paint. Now I just have to get my husband to stop rolling his eyes about my fan plan....

I'm seriously looking at painting my fan blades, too - that ugly oak and cane look that seems to be the standard in every ceiling fan from the 80's and 90's - yuck. I look at it every day, as it's over my bed. I love the fan - I like to sleep in a cool room. Hate the look of the thing, from the fan blades to the ruffle-edged glass for the light bulbs. I'm still looking for 5 matching globes in a simpler style.

Cool Ideas I'm thinking about trying the cement counter tops. Don't know if I am brave enough though.

A friend of ours did concrete counter tops. Didn't have any experience at all. They turned out great!
