I've ordered from various suppliers over the years but keep coming back to MMS (Majestic Mountain Sage)or Appalacian Valley Other suppliers I've used in the past include Wholesales Supplies Plus, Bramberry, Sweet Cakes, Bitter Creek and others. For finding specific fragrance oils (or other suppliers), check out the Fragrance Oil Finder

Cyndi- what carrier oils do you use with these blends?

I make a lotion for the icy hot ... using only 3% of total weight for the eo blend.
I've used the brown windsor in soaps.
I like using either sweet almond oil or fractionated coconut oil as carriers oils.

I'm lucky in that I have a store about a half an hour away that sells candle and soap making supplies...so I've bought from them. The only vendor I've dealt with so far online is Nature's Garden, and I have been happy with their stuff so far.

Have any of you tried to distill your own oils? I know it takes a lot of vegetation (i.e. lavender), but I've heard that it is a lot more "pure and natural" than even the highest quality commercial product. I've often wondered.....

I'd be interested in learning about that. I don't really have access to enough vegetation (because I don't have any! lol) but that sounds really interesting and I like to learn new things. Someone start a new thread on that, please!

Wholesale supplies plus and Brambleberry are the two I stick with. Nowadays, scents and containers are getting more and more expensive and I'm less likely to experiment with fragrance oils.

I usually use Mountain Rose Herbs, also the local Mennonite store carries EO's, NOW brand I think, I get a few there. Not a fan of multi level marketing, if I'm going to help out a friend by doing business with them I'd rather my friend be the one to get the profit. It takes really specific equipment to distill EO's, but I'd gladly make my own hydrosols for cooking, room sprays, or lotions. Tricky part would be getting the oils separated from the water if you want to make EO, a small still costs hundreds, but a pot with an inverted lid can gather hydrosols. For uses besides soap scenting, tea tree oil for skin infections, eucaluptus aromatherapy for congestion, and mint, orange, or cinnamon for candy making, now I lean toward tinctures, teas, and infused oils from whole herbs. Seems more sustainable and more broadly applicable.

I mostly use Majestic Mountain Sage and Camden grey. I used to also use Paw-made soap company, but I think they went out of business.

Cyndi, was it you who told me about the apothecary site? I don't remember who did. Their prices were a tad high, but they had a good selection.

I've bough eo's from them and bramble berry, and mountain rose herbs, but usually WF medical. Truthfully I look around for the best price I can get.

I have used brambleberry and someone else, can't remember. I agree the essential oils are too pricy for me to experiment, or even buy large amounts.

I know it takes a lot of vegetation (i.e. lavender), but I've heard that it is a lot more "pure and natural" than even the highest quality commercial product. I've often wondered..... I've been playing with this recently. It does take a LOT of vegetation. I'm not sure most of us would have access to that sort of volume. I'm actually not after the EO's, but may get there in the future. I definitely need a separating funnel, though. senselesslyrandom.blogspot.com/2015/07/distilling-hydrosols.html Here's what I've done so far. At the moment, sagebrush and juniper have given me the most oil. I haven't got around to trying the pine trees yet. The softer plants like catnip don't give me hardly any. I also suspect that plants that have to 'work' harder to survive, like ones out in the wild vs garden will have more oils. They are more potent herbally so I don't see why they wouldn't be more potent 'oil-ly' as well. I would like to try yarrow, but not much grows on my place yet. Working on it. Cool post. Judging from that, I won't have to buy a still. I can just make one! Thanks for the link!

Remember it takes alot of energy to distill plant oils. I checked into this back some 40 years ago. If I remember correctly it takes a ton of catnip to extract 8 oz of oil. Other plants had other yields, but looking around the farm it would have been difficult to scare up even 50 pounds of catnip. The immense amount of plant material and amount of firewood that's needed to fuel the operation and the constant monitoring makes the job quite dificult. We have an old still from my great grandparents day that I had never seen in use. But from what I could gather it could only produce about a gallon on alcohol. Considering the size of it I doubt it would produce much more than a quarter ounce of oil, if I were successful. After some serious consideration and research I decided to stick with fishing as a constructive use of time and purchasing essential oils and booze at the store.
