So who here raises wool sheep and spins their wool?
What breeds do you have?
I miss raising wool sheep and the joyful bouncing lambs each spring, and would love to see all of yours.

Hi bergere,
I raise Icelandics. No lambs yet. But I will post pictures. Lambs having races is the best part of spring. Susan

I switched to alpacas this year. I really miss the lambs though. Really miss them. I had finnsheep for a while, then switched to BFLxCVMxcorriedale.

I just sold my wonderful Finn Ewe, was hard letting her go, but I can no longer shear. She had the softest fleece. I too miss having the bouncing baby lambs in the spring,, was always so much fun watching them. Also love BFL one of my favorite to spin right now.... plan on trying some Corriedale fleece this summer... I hope.
How are your Alpacas doing?

They are doing very well. They do not want to come into the barn at night...so I let them stay out now. They aren't too excited by grain either so I guess they are getting plenty to eat by nibbling at the grass that isn't quite growing yet. They turn up their noses at the hay too.
I love BFL...but they are such a big sheep for so little fleece. The BFLxCVM cross was really nice. soft, lots of shine and curls - 3x as much as on a BFL.

Glad to hear they are doing well. Sure they will come around in time. Keep trying the different treats, sooner or later you will find one, they will come to you for. Hmm... wonder if you could get them hooked on Alfalfa? Most animals go nuts over it. LOL The three I had, only one was tame and he loved being around people, so that helped, the other two would follow him every where. Got lucky with that. Could halter the one, so was able to get halters on the others and start training them. Once I had the two wild ones gelded, they calmed down a bit. Used the zephyr alpaca halter, because halter placement is very important. To low down, and you cut off their ability to breath. Luckily I learned that when I had that Llama way back when. Keeps your Aplacas from being a pile of panic. www.camelidynamics.com/store/category/zephyr-halters/That BFL/CVM cross sounds really nice! Wonder if anyone has some?

Yes, I have the zephyr halters. I had them for the 2 llamas I had and liked them so I bought smaller ones for these guys. They will eat grain out of my hand. They think the only reason I come outside is to give them treats. But they are in no way food driven like my sheep. It's just a different attitude I am learning to work with. My males, ungelded for the next little bit, are the most calm. The 2 females are really crazy. One kicks out sideways if I even look at her. The other one is tiny but sassy. I am looking for an older trained one to help here. Right now, we are getting along just fine- if they'd quit rolling in the manure pile and the hay I put out for them. I see all that junk in that beautiful, baby, suri fleece and I want to cry!
his is Dottie. Somtimes I call her Ceci...like Cecily....but she came with the name "Dottie". Dot, the Dough head works best for her though.

That is great, those are wonderful Halters!
Sounds like those girls are a hand full. Ouch, I would cry too if mind rolled in that. Feel your pain. Dottie is cute!

Just a quick update. I have a first time ewe who I think will lamb tonight. I was hoping today - but I am still waiting. My husband and I have been out checking every hour or two. She laid around all morning. But this afternoon and early evening she is eating hay in between rest breaks. Her name is Bess. And she comes up to the gate for scratches.
I will post pictures. Susan

I keep Cotswolds. I spin some, but I don't have the time to do as much as I'd like. Our fleeces are rather dirty as well as very long, so they must be hand combed, it's amazing how fast the wool that took me a week to comb gets spun up.

I love it. Combed Cotswold lends itself to long draw worsted spinning, so if you have a different style your opinion may vary. I can draw a pretty thin and consistent yarn for a beginner. It's not as soft as some others, but very strong and a nice shine when spun worsted. English Long Wools were a luxury fiber before the wool mill was invented which couldn't handle the fiber length. They used to weave it with thin strips of gold for royalty and priests. Ok, ok, I'm a rambling fan...

I spin worsted for most of my stuff, so that would work. Sounds like I need to try some soon!
I don't mind rambling, one can learn cool things that way. VBG

Oh... very sweet Electric spinner! I'm still waiting for delivery on the electric one. I'm currently using a navajo spindle, which I really like much better than drop or smaller supported spindles. The electric will be my first wheel.

I hate when that happens. Sounds like last year, bought DH a custom ball cap with an aircraft carrier on it, back in Oct, for his xmas gift. Never showed up, he finally got it two weeks ago. Its a little late to be his xmas gift.
