The hubby and I are complete newbs when it comes to painting. We have taken a few free classes from our library and find we really like it. We have been watching Bob Ross videos together and find he makes it look so simple that we would love to try. Since we are so green and it is a pretty sizeable investment to get his paints, brushes, canvas etc, we are unsure if we should take the plunge. Has anyone else followed his videos with a very limited background in painting and found success? Here are some of the paintings we have done, for reference. We know nothing about shading, brush strokes or any of that stuff Bob Ross talks about lol. So when I say two newbies setting out to follow Bob Ross, I do mean total newbies. His paintings at the end always leave us with our jaws hanging, they are absolutely amazing each and every single time, but he makes us think we could do something like it with the way he teaches/shows it!!

If it were me, I'd take an adult ed, college or artist's association class in preference. There is an investment in materials that you can avoid by taking some classes. And that is good until you've tried enough to be sure you really like it. And it is good to have some to answer questions because nothing is ever as easy as a practised professional makes it look.

I have no painting experience at all but when I saw you talking about Bob Ross I just wanted to agree with you. He made it look so simple and was always so calm and relaxed, a real tranquilizer without the chemical side effects. I used to watch his videos on TV - PBS? - and always enjoyed them even though I'm not a painter. If it were me, I'd start with the most basic necessities and build from there. Looking at the paintings you posted, you already have a good start. Kudos to you for making this a wonderful family activity!
