Or what I'm calling them - book ledges. I have this area at the end of the hallway where I've always wanted to put a bookshelf, but it's too small. There is about 4" of depth there total. If I was to go any bigger you'd run into it as you came out of the bedroom on the right. I also had to be aware of the bedroom to the left because I didn't want anyone to come out of there and catch their arm or worse their head on a corner. They are 3.5" deep and perfect to display and store my books on.
The books that are currently on the shelves will not be the final decorating, they're what I had handy to see how well it would work. The big book in the middle will stay because I don't have anywhere to keep it and I love looking through it. The bottom shelf has a couple of magazines and a recent book purchase on there and the left side is holding my son's library books. The picture sitting in the floor is what was hanging in this spot, obviously it won't be staying there. Not that I have any clue where it is going. I bought it with a birthday gift card last year without thinking about where it would fit.
Please ignore how bad my door frames look. They are on the list to be painted, as well as the doors since they are new also. The "list" just keeps getting longer - never shorter.
They were really easy to make. I cut 2 pieces of 1x3 and 1 piece of 1x2 to my desired length which was 22". Then I screwed the bottom piece into the back piece and attached the front with finish nails. All the holes were filled and then I spray painted them a bright white which I hope will match the trim and doors when I get them done. To attach them to wall I counterset a couple of screws through the back piece and screwed them into the wall studs. I wasn't sure how much weight I would be putting on them and wanted to make sure that they would hold.
