shellymay, So far, 3 of the little mules have become more friendly towards me, mostly because they think I have food! Gladys Night and Pip still won't approach me, they are very skittish. Until all can come to me and be haltered, they will stay in a little paddock on my top pasture, that way I can get them cornered and haltered for farriers. As soon as they consistently come to me and allow me to handle them, then they can all be turned out. Bibi is the smallest, and a fierce little warrior when she thinks she is going to be hurt. But very sweet now that she knows I won't hurt her. Gidget was the first to me, she was haltered at the vets and has not been very hard to catch. Now she just walks right up to me even if I don't have feed with me. Bente was the second to come to me, but she is still a little shy. They are all very head shy. I will post some pics of Jack today if I can get some. He is a handsome boy:-)

Woodpecker, mzgarden, Thank you both for the very kind words. I am the last resort for all of the equine I take in. The sheriff knows she can count on me, but boy...my heart sure hurts seeing some of these poor little ones. The mules, their little feet were so horrible, not as bad as Jack's, but almost. They are all doing extremely well, only a couple show any lingering lameness. Those will have to be watched carefully, but I am so pleased with how they are coming along! Jack...we will see how that boy does. He is in such a bad founder. If it had been caught quickly, he could have recovered, but... There is a pony mare as well that came with the mini mules. She is 22 years old and in very bad shape. Very thin, and badly foundered. My vet said she has only seen one pony that was worse than Junie...I am so hoping she will come around for me, but I don't know. Time will tell...

Those mini mules (?) are incredibly cute. The white one is just a heart throb. And just looking at them I think they will soon be pocket pals. Well the spotted ones look to have a little opinion- I'm sure they will come around.
However the pictures of Jack's feet are heartrending.

I want to thank you for sharing these pics. With your permission, I'd like to share them with a friend who is an animal lover but not yet very horse-wise; and she feeds her mini until the poor little critter looks like a foot-stool. I've told her about founder; but your pics speak much more eloquently. I have to say, they're adorable! There's something about taking care of the old ones that does good things for us.

Here are a couple pic of Jack. He is a little guy, and we are fairly certain he is a Paso Fino. He is between 17-20 yrs old.

Jack does have a kind eye. I hope he is recoverable.
What was his situation that his feet were allowed to get so bad? Even if he had foundered, letting them grow so long was pretty extreme.

Pure neglect, plain and simple. He was pastured with mares and kept them pregnant, apparently that was all the owner wanted. All horses were confiscated, one mare is about 400 pounds light, the other in very bad physical condition overall. I expect to maybe get them this coming week.

Animals can be such easy victims. It is an easy trip from benign neglect to abuse.

A real looker that is for sure, so much better with his new feet. So do they have to learn to walk and or run again once feet are all trimmed back to (as normal as possible)?

A real looker that is for sure, so much better with his new feet. So do they have to learn to walk and or run again once feet are all trimmed back to (as normal as possible)? They don't have to relearn walking, but they do have a lot of soreness due to severe angle changes. My mini mules are doing fairly well, the pony mare less well. Jack is doing better, but he is foundered so badly that the angle changes aren't the main problem. We are in a wait and see time with him. I hate that they are hurting, but it's part of the healing process for these guys...

I've thoroughly enjoyed this thread aoconnor... Makes me happy and sad at the same time-ya know? Of course you do - silly me. Just tugs at my heart strings in regards to what some animals have to go through. You do indeed have a big heart and I feel you are a kindred spirit due to your love and compassion for these poor babies. You obviously know what a nut I am in regards to my chickens... hence the "kindred spirit" reference... If there was a big problem with chicken abuse/neglect - you know what I'd be doing! Thanks so much for sharing, Mari

How are the new arrivals doing, aoconnor? The mini mules are doing awesome. One is being adopted this next week, she will go to a great new home! The other 4 mm's will live with me permanently. Sadly, Jack the long toed stallion, began crashing this past week. His feet just couldn't take the years of neglect any longer and we put him down this morning. My heart aches for him, but the pain he must have been in was beyond what I was willing to tolerate any longer. He at least knew someone cared about him for a few weeks of his painful life.

Well that sure brings tears to my eyes... Poor baby... But you did your best and I hope that brings you some solace... Just makes me so angry thinking about all of the neglect/pain so many of these animals have to endure. I commend you aoconnor for all you do to help these wondrous and beautiful creatures. Take care, Mari

Thank you all for the kind words. It's so hard to let one go that has been so neglected...I always want to let them know that there is kindness and care in life, and when they have to be put down so soon sfter coming to me, it is always with a very heavy heart on my part that I do what is necessary. Poor Jack, he stood for years in pain, not understanding that it wasn't supposed to be like that. At least now he is running free and easy, and he knows I did my best for him.

So sorry to hear about Jack, aoconnor, but we all know you did all you could. And I think he knew it too. I wish there was some way to make his former owners pay for the pain they have caused. Jail time and fines just aren't enough, imo. Thank you for being their angel!

Jail time and fines just aren't enough, imo. Thank you for being their angel! Things tend to come around on people like that. Tomorrow I take his paperwork from my vet to the sheriff, they will be prosecuting Jacks previous owners, I have to be satisfied with at least that...it is more than most people get when they neglect or abuse animals.
