Can insects "reason" and think out a solution?

It's long been thought that man was the only animal that could reason out a solution to a problem;
i.e.  If I do this, then that will happen and will result in what I'm trying to achieve.  Over the years,
science has determined that other animals do display certain patterns of reasoning to achieve goals,
but until now, insects were thought not to have this capability.....may I present evidence to the contrary.

The ants in my kitchen today could not think for themselves....sprayed them with water.....then hot, soapy water.....so far, they have not ventured back in through the window sill....

the last cockroach I encountered knew what I was going to do,
it nearly outsmarted me
yet it was not expecting high voltage to be across the wires I had set up for it
