Today I learned that it is unwise to start cutting fabric using a pattern you've had donkey's years, without first ascertaining if you still have all the pieces. I found I didn't have the "trouser back", but I winged that, but now I find that in fact the front (zip placket side) facing is also AWOL, as are 2 other facing/interfacing pieces... So now I've got the 4 major pieces cut, but the little bits which are what the tailoring is all about are not to be found anywhere in the house. I guess I will put this project on hold until I find this pattern on eBay. Grrrr.
I'm actually pretty good at making clothes without patterns, but it's been awhile and I just don't want to mess this up. Not at the price of fabric these days.
The other thing I learned, is that nobody sews anymore. Quilters, yes, but nobody makes their own clothes anymore. So you can't find blue thread in a medium-sized town like ours anymore. Have to go to the JoAnne's at the Maul. I'd stopped making clothes myself when it was cheaper to find stuff at thrift stores, but now, since there has only been schlock clothing to be found in dept stores for decades, now only used schlock is to be found at thrift stores. Used to be, you find cool stuff at Goodwill and the like, but no more. Secondhand garbage is all you can find. So I decided I'd need to make my own again, if I'm going to be at all decently attired.

TIL that no matter how big your fireproof fireplace rug is, there can always be a not-quite-ready-to-burn log that can spit a spark farther than the edge of said rug. Sigh.

OK, I really didn't learn this just today, but I'm remembering just how much I didn't like working nights.
Because we're so short-staffed and because one of my co-workers had a death in the family and another quit, I have to work nights for two weeks. Luckily, I'm on week two.
This is probably about the worst time to be changing shifts: We're undergoing a full house remodel and I'm scheduled to run a half marathon on Sunday. So, I work until past midnight, drive home and try to jump out of bed at 6 a.m. Now, our son and I are sick. I had to call the doctor and get some Z-pack antibiotic thing so I could nip a sore throat in the bud before it interfered with Sunday’s run.
The very lives and souls of my co-workers are in peril because I'm about to unleash upon them a well-deserved kitty-style hissy fit.

TIL that I cracked the top 30,000 ranked authors on all of Kindle. This may not seem like a big accomplishment, but there are well over a million authors over there. ... sorry for the shameless self promotion. My husband is sick of hearing about it and I've got to share it with somebody! Well, I am mightily impressed! Good job!! I'd like to have ONE book on Kindle. I suppose I'd actually have to write it, wouldn't I? Oh, nevermind... Thank you so much. I have been wanting people to read me for twenty years. I started freelance writing about eight years ago for experience and to pay some bills. I've been actively putting books out (first with a publisher, and then self published) for the last three years. It has been a very long road to get where I am today, and it is immensely satisfying to see it spreading like wildfire. If you have a book in you to write, do it! My first novel took me 7 years to complete. Putter with it, have fun with it. You never know where it might take you down the road.

Today I learned that chopping onions when you have a broken wrist is quite a challenge. I also learned that if you have a food processor you should probably use it. It would've taken a lot less time. ~Slaps forehead~
I'm so used to chopping everything by hand that it didn't occur to me to use that handy little appliance until I looked over at the counter. By that time I was pretty much done chopping. I'm not the brightest bulb today, but I'm making an effort to get things done.

TIL that baked corn that takes about an hour at 350* to cook can be done in under an hour at 400* or higher. Someone at church (not me for once) forgot to put it into the oven. It must have tasted ok because there was only a couple of spoonfuls left.

That when changing a filter on water system, have a routine for opening and closing valves. I forgot to close a small one on the filter holder and flooded the pump house floor. Shut off everything to close the valve and as I was drying the floor I noticed the filter o ring had fallen off. So after I got the o ring back in place, made sure the valve was closed and turned on the water. Went back into the house to find no water. Sigh- forgot to open the last valve because I got distracted by the flood.

TIL that I have the smartest or the dumbest dog ever. Haven't decided which yet! She will dig in my flowerbed when no one is looking. I can never catch her at it. Yet as soon as I see it, she knows she is in trouble & will hang her head in shame. I am seriously ready to kill her! I wish I could break her of this habit, but so far no luck. I wish I could actually catch her in the act, but I do not have time to watch her 24/7.

Chicken wire or chain-link, anything gridded that she won't be able to pull up? The plants will grow through, but she won't be able to dig down. I do realize that this probably isn't helpful in a super established bed. But if it is an area you are just planting, or if she digs in the same couple of areas each time, it would be an "invisible" dig barrier.

I wish I could actually catch her in the act, but I do not have time to watch her 24/7. This brought back a great memory for me. I had a dog that did the same. Eventually we arrived at a compromise where she had a spot she could dig as she wanted if she left the rest alone. I can still see in my mind's eye her tail sticking up from the ground, wagging, as she was head down in a three foot hole at the back of the yard, digging away. Once a week or so I would shovel the loose dirt back in the hole for her to start all over again.

UGH! About 27 years ago I made some tomatoes stuffed with salmon for my family. Three littles and DH. They didn't comment. They ate it but I thought to myself, that tomatoes and salmon are probably the worst combination for my taste buds. I really thought it tasted bad, terrible, bad, I'm a bad cook, I'm stupid. I never put tomatoes and salmon together again. Tomatoes and Salmon create a huge fear in me that I might be a BAD COOK. My taste buds told me I was right. I cook almost everything from scratch and now I'm a failure, oh no, a failure as a cook is also a failure as a mother, teacher of children, buyer of food.....
So last night late, the PBS channel is on and I'm watching Lidia, the cooking show. (love those cooking shows) And she said, "tomatoes and salmon are not really a good combination", THAT IS WHAT she said, FINALLY, my taste buds are vindicated and they have been validated, FINALLY. It's not just me or my taste buds that know that fact. Then Lidia went on to make salmon with potatoes, onions and TOMATO even after she said that tomatoes and salmon aren't a good combination. I just laughed at that. No one will care about this but now I know my taste buds are not defective, I am a GOOD COOK, I've done okay, my kids are good cooks, I'm not a failure, I know what I'm doing........
I laugh at myself.......finally. Self doubt should be against the law.

...........I , finally remembered , that , even though I Love Egg Salad , I only make it every other year , because , I HATE peeling the eggs ! , fordy Steam your eggs--about 15 mins for hard boiled! It Really works on farm fresh new eggs to get the shell right off. I saw this on another forum and tried it and will Never go back to boiling, cooling, soaking or other tricks. It just plain works to "hard boil" eggs in a vegie steamer rack with boiling water under it. I don't know Why it's so different, but it's a darn miracle! Try it! I learned today that after mucking out a chicken coop a layer of zeolite and sand will make the chore SMELL FREE a year later( I much each Spring for our run). Chickens can eat zeolite with no problem and it sanitizes their poop Too.
