I just purchased Neem Seed Oil - boy does it stink! I wanted to make a soap that my husband could use to deter mosquitoes! It will deter ANYTHING! Will it maintain that odor as a soap? Will adding a potent EO/FO work?

I used it once at a friends request. Had to let my soap cure outside! It does lose some of the scent over time. I think you would need to use a lot of an oil to cover that scent.

Do you remember what percent of the oils the neem was? And did the smell linger on the person after using it? My sister still wants me to make it...she doesn't know what it smells like!

I'm one of the strange ones that doesn't mind the scent of Neem, it smells kind of garlic-y to me.
I use it at 15% of the recipe.

I use it in a clear skin soap and yes, it smells even after cured, though not as strongly.

We used this to spray the green beans in the garden one year and boy is it pungent. I can't imagine how this would smell if added to soap.

Junalee, did it keep the bugs off? I was thinking of using it for that too!

I don't mind the smell of neem oil, but it is not usually the "main" oil in my soap. It is usually one of the smaller quantities. If you pair it with an essential oil that is not flowery-smelling, it just becomes an a background smell. (I need more coffee, not explaining very well.) i.e. Don't pair it with rosehips or lavender, but rather rosemary or eucalaptus, etc.

It helped cut back the quantity of bugs but it did not get rid of all of them. We still had to pick off a bunch.

Well I made the neem oil soap with the neem being 15%, and Lavender FO. Gave it to my sister to use yesterday. She called me a few hours later and said that she was outside grilling and the gnats and mosquitoes were killing her so she decided to go wash her arms and legs with the soap. She didn't rinse it off. No bug problems after that. I made a very small batch so now I'll have to make a full batch.
Also, maybe because I made just a few bars, it didn't smell too bad curing in my kitchen and I'm kinda getting used to it!
