I'm a hugger. Always have been. Not a cuddler or petter but a hugger. And trying to find a companion animal for someone like me is hard.
I mean, my dogs were loyal companions, would sit with me endlessly. Loved scratching and stroking but hugging? They might tolerate but their stiffness made it clear that being hugged was not to their liking.
But horses now. There is a creature to hug on. Horses, maybe not all but most, seem to be fine with the hug. Tall enough, you can fit under their neck and really give a big hug. Smaller, you can still hug their neck.
This has been driven home to me lately during the cleaning out after Tessie's surgery. She will actually rest her forehead gently on my arm when we're done. I then give her head a hug, sometimes with a scratch under her jaw. Very gentle.
Of course, this is not a procedure I can recommend as with a toss of a head a horse can send you flying minus some of your teeth plus a concussion. But, for a hugger, it's a risk I will take at times.

Tessie sounds like a best friend...I can just picture you giving her a hug and gentle rub. She may be too large to cuddle, but she still shows her love for you. So sweet. I also love hugs😘 There's nothing like a strong hug to pick my spirits up.

With dogs it seems to depend on the dog, my dog, sounds like yours, she'll sit there but all stiff, certainly not enjoying it. Unless she's scared then she's convinced she's small enough to be a lap dog. (she isn't) but the husbands, well he has a pug and given a chance it will hug you and kiss you to death, and then lie happily in your arms. actually much like it's owner.

I love horse hugs:-). My big TB mare will give me head hugs by putting her head against my chest and resting there. I have several who actually wrap around me with their head and neck, and that is the best kind of love and hug I know of:-).
I just picked up an older mare, she is bilnd in one eye (a trainer hit her in the face and and her eye was badly damaged) and has been abused. I took her straight to the vet for shots and coggins, and while we were standing quietly in the exam area, she put her head against me and started a nice full head hug, wrapped me right up. I instantly fell even more in love with her than I had been!
