We' e been working on this house for years and the last thing is the shower in the master bathroom.
I have done just about everything related to house construction but am afraid of building the shower pan. The tile work is no problem but....
It's going to be 5' x 5' with no door. 9' ceiling. Backer board is up on three sides and the drain is in. I search the internet, talk to people and still don't know what system to use among the many. I'm currently thinking about putting down dry mortar trowled to drain with 1" fall from the edges to the center drain, spraying it with enough water to set the mortar, rubber sheet on that with edges folded up on the wall a foot or so, more mortar, waterproof ruberized paint, and then tile.
I've only got one shot at this since I won't know if it leaks untill it's done and I turn on the water.
Has anybody here built a shower pan like this? Did it work?

modern shower pans are easy to do. in the old days you had to mold and solder lead, nowadays its just a rubber membrane like the ice and water shield you use on a roof. the big trick is going far enough up the wall just in case of a plug up.

after you get your slope to the drain and install the pan you can check it for leaks by filling it with water, your inspector will do this if you pulled a permit. when you pull the plug every last drop of water should drain, if any part of the pan has a pool then your slope is not correct and you need to start over. if it drains and there are no pools then you are ready to add the finish product and you know any water that leaks through will be stopped by the pan and funneled to the drain.

Slightly off topic, but when I installed a new fiberglass shower in the basement, I put in 2 shower heads, 1 on each end controlled by the same valve. It is WONDERFUL and I would highly recommend it as long as you have enough hot water!!!
