I can't say what I think that the punishment should be if the jerks are caught. It would be different if just one were tipped over to steal some comb honey. They just wanted to kill the bees. I can't imagine anyone ever wanting to do something as senseless as that. I don't think anyone has an answer.

Read the article earlier today... Hard to come up with words to describe what I felt... The first one that comes to mind is sickened... Worthless pieces of protoplasm indeed.

It was nice to see that the Go-Fund-Me page raised over $30,000 to enable the beekeepers to re-start their business. Yes, there are brainless vandals in the world, but there are also a lot of good people.

It probably never occurred to them that tipping over the hives would kill the bees - or someone's business, for that matter.

It's something bored kids would do. A ten year old might kick down one or two, but all thirty sounds like teenagers. They might never do it again, but I think a camera is in order.

What a sad thing to read. I pray the beekeepers are able to re-build their hives and bee population. What a mess.

I don't understand the valuation numbers they came up with. Another article mentioned that there was $50k in damages. With 50 hives being affected that would mean they are valued at ~$1k/hive? I would sell hives all day long if I could even get half that $.
Regardless, I feel for the owners losing everything and needing to start over.

Steve, what would it cost to replace 50 hives and 50 swarms? I have several friends who have lots of hives. One shelled out $23,000 this past spring to cover his winter losses. With shipping, you won't find many under $200 for a nuke nowadays. Five hives and there's a grand just in bees. But, will admit that $50,000 for 50 hives is a bit high if at replacement value. But what if each of those hives had a full deep super of honey? Then that estimate would be low.

Steve, what would it cost to replace 50 hives and 50 swarms? And don't forget labor. Even as a "side-line" business, there is considerable time and effort required to replace those colonies, beyond the capital costs of boxes and bees.

I think the value is not only based on the cost of new hives, but on the loss of honey and combs. Then, add the value of bringing your hives around in the spring and summer to pollinate crops.

Insurance unfortunately doesn't cover most of the add-ons, especially with beekeeping. I am working on some electronics to prevent theft and aid recovery. What I have been told by some pros is that the only insurables are the woodenware. To answer the question about what I would use for valuation...$350-$500 per. That seems to be the going rate for a complete 10-frame single in my area during summer. I bought my 1st nuc for $125 and I saw the same apiary selling them in spring last year for $100. I hope I'm not coming across poorly because if I am, that isn't my intention. I'm a numbers & facts person by nature, That's why the $50k number jumped out at me. I have lots of sympathy for any business that suffers these kinds of losses. Edit: He's selling mediums for $125 this year. williamsport.craigslist.org/grd/d/honeybees-for-sale-2018/6395573152.html

This just sickens me. Even as a teenager I would NEVER have done something like this. What is wrong with people today! I hope this couple can rebuild their business. And I hope they can catch the vandals. The article says there were fingerprints, so maybe something will come of the investigation.

In the 70's the instructor for the beekeeping course at Penn State said he quit branding the hives 'PSU' because some people apparently thought that stood for Please Steal Us. I hope they catch these vandals.

The law caught them, two males, 12 and 13. Donations to help the beekeepers are now up to $30,000 to help them rebuild the business. Now saw something about a similar "copycat" event somewhere with 100 hives involved. What in hell is going on with some people?

Martin What I want to know is whether these two will be punished severely enough that they won't do that or something like that again. I suspect mommy & daddy will get a politically correct talking to and the kids will probably have some form of juvenile probation but basically nothing of any consequence. While I'm not advocating they be executed, there are countries in this world where less of a crime would get them just that. I would say, though, that their punishment should be significant. Should they be required to build 500 complete hives to replace the 50 they destroyed, maybe? And if they don't know how, they can learn. (I know, dream on, not gonna happen...)
