The cortex of the hair shaft is located between the hair cuticle and medulla and is the thickest hair layer. It also contains most of the hair's pigment, giving the hair its color. The pigment in the cortex is melanin, which is also found in skin.

Curly fibers are made of two types of spindle-shaped cell: paracortical cells, which line the inside of the curl, and orthocortical cells, which line the outside. In any given strand, any orthocortical cell will always be longer than any paracortical. That reinforces the idea that the differences between them are linked to the curl.
