Or did I? I just ordered 3 rose bushes. Two in order to plant near a people gate as they were supposed to be thornless.
But since I just spent three days digging out a supposedly thornless climber that turned out to be neither thornless or that appealing, I decided that thorough research before planting was needed. I found what I think are accurate reports that the Mme Alfred Carriere is not thornless. It's thorns are not big but are plentiful on 2nd year wood but not new growth. So no gate rose that one. I have another that I will use.
So now I have what is reported to be a ginormous climbing rose with thorns to either throw out or plant. The first thing that came to mind was goat fodder. If I plant it in the pasture near the seasonal creek, it could form a twenty foot diameter rose patch if not eaten and, if the stems are protected from goatie chompers, would arch over and provide fodder. The reaches above goat standing height would flower but the goats would keep it trimmed back to the protecting fence.
Any thoughts? Anyone have a Mme Alfred Carriere?

Any thoughts? Anyone have a Mme Alfred Carriere? I love roses but have always been a bit scared of growing them as they seem such needy, high maintenance plants. Hadn't heard of this particular variety so I looked it up. Gosh it's lovely! And, of course, I want one, LOL.
