I bought a bag of "steam crimped oats" this week for the first time in a decade. I think I was expecting seriously crimped oats where most of the grains had visible crimp marks but these seem to mostly just have the hull cracked a bit.
I'm thinking rolled oats shoukf have been what I wanted for my older horse.

I buy steamed, crimped oats when I need them. They always look almost like oatmeal, most of the shell is cracked and they are flattened..

get your own roller, that way you make what you want. they are not even that pricey I think my roller was about 30 $ unlike the grain mill that was something like 400 $

Steam rolled are flat but near 1 pc, like oatmeal. With steam crimped, some may have a mark, some nothing depending on how tight the crimper was set. Steam rollers and crimpers are expensive. Dry rolled is basically cracked grains, coarser and less dust than ground. Steam rolled is a much better feed....James

was unaware that they made a device to do Steam rolling all in one device. I soak and steam them first, then put it through the low priced roller.
