Back story - went to an auction at a garden center that had gone out of business 5+ years ago. Bought an apothecary jar that had about 1 cup of tiny black seeds and was labeled broccolini. Late winter, I tried to germinate indoors just to see and got nothing so I tossed the seed in the snow and got this . Close up looks like this. I tasted the leaves raw and they sort of taste like a brassica and sort of like kale. The stems are sort of purple-ish so now I'm thinking it's Red Kale. I thinned like crazy today and harvested the leaves of the thinnings and was going to saute them but the more I look at them the more I wonder what it is. Ideas?

I don't know for sure. When I look at broccolini leaves (seedlings) they seem to be more rounded leaves, not pointy at all. The kale leaves look more like yours, more pointed and the similar shape.

feather, thanks. I'm leaning toward kale. My plants are very young and the leaves are not broad yet, but they do have the same pattern as your picture. And, in the bottom right of your picture, there are very young leaves that look almost identical to mine. Thanks.

I started some kale seedlings, my first time for that. That picture isn't mine. I'm a little nervous about kale wondering if anyone here will eat it!?! I will try it, and see how it goes. I miss having a little green during the winters here.

@kiwifarmgal, excellent, thanks for the link. I'm swimming in Kale so I'll definitely be looking for recipes. Wind in Her Hair, what are some of your favorite ways of eating Kale?

@kiwifarmgal , excellent, thanks for the link. I'm swimming in Kale so I'll definitely be looking for recipes. Wind in Her Hair , what are some of your favorite ways of eating Kale? We make vegetable/fruit smoothies almost every day for either breakfast or lunch. The smoothie, which WIHH and I split, generally contains 2 cups of raw kale. Sometimes we substitute raw table beet tops for the kale. We also add raw kale to our large garden salads.
