Well, I fell for it. Bought a dozen Buff Orpington and/or Leghorn chicks at Tractor Supply about 10 days ago. These wouldn't have been my first choice of breed in the case of the leghorns, but due to time constraints in the coming months, I couldn't wait any longer to get started growing them out, so we settled for what they had at the time.
My questions is, I have limited experience with this breed, from way back when I was a kid and my great uncle had a flock that was really flighty. I'm wondering if you guys have an opinion on the temperament of this breed. These chicks have been here for ten days, and after losing one who just wasn't growing, the other 11 are down right stupid. Super flighty, you can't even look at them without them running around the box like a bunch of idiots. I hope they don't kill themselves before they get old enough to lay eggs.
All the other chicks that we've raised were heritage breeds like Orpingtons, Barred Rocks, Wyandottes etc. They were all super calm and easy to handle, almost from the first day, and then all turned out to be easy to handle for the rest of their days. I can walk through my flock and the chickens flock around me instead of walking away, and that's what I want from these new chicks, too, but I don't think it's going to happen.
So what do you all think of Leghorns? I semi free range during the warmer months and I can already tell I'll have to clip the wings of these little ones, for sure!
