Okay, I live in the snow belt. I get that. I'm here by choice, not by chance. And I love snow. In December, January, February. I'm okay with March snow, too.
April snowstorms I do not love. Or even remotely like. And after breaking all time snowfall records this past winter, I am honestly and truly tired of snow. We've had, what, over 110 inches of snow, including 5 FEET OF SNOW in the shortest month of the year alone. We're finally starting to see the ground again.
Enter the belated April fool joke - some sources are saying we're going to get another foot of snow (maybe more?) later this week. NO! This has to be a joke, right?
Or maybe this is payback for all the times EARLIER this winter when I complained about our lack of decent snow, and even told people who were getting a lot of snow that I wished they could share it. Apparently my request was heard. And answered. And then some. Be careful what you wish for.
We've decided that when we move (within the next two years) we're heading south. South-central Wisconsin, that is. It was downright balmy when we were there last week. Bare ground. Wide open water on the lakes. Sunshine. I think that's where we'll head next.
Meanwhile, I'm still holding out hope that the forecasts are wrong. Hey, I can dream...

susannah, I heard about that storm too, good luck. I don't like cold weather but it wouldn't be so bad if the people driving knew what to do in bad weather. We live in Ohio, it snows here. Yet every time it does people act like it's never happened before! It's ridiculous. Hopefully if you all do get snow it melts quickly! With that much snow this year are your yards flooded? We didn't get anywhere near what you did and we still have some flooding in fields and yards.

susannah , I heard about that storm too, good luck. Surprisingly, despite the amount of snow - and rain, lately - due to the very slow melting we don't have any ponding of water on our property except for the low area in the woods near the lake. We call it the swamp because it's almost always wet, so it's nothing out of the ordinary. We have sandy/gravelly soil and we don't see the kind of ponding we did when we lived in an area with clay soil. Driving through the state I did see a lot of soggy yards - and flooded rivers, some higher than I've ever seen. Ah, snow driving. When we lived in the city it was horrible - so much more traffic, and dh always said that it seems if the weather is bad people drive faster to make up for lost time. Usually with bad results. The first time I had to drive up here after a big snowfall (before the plows were even out) I was amazed by how people drove slowly, no one tailgated - while I wouldn't call it relaxing it was a nice change from what I'm used to. All things being equal, though - I'd rather not drive in heavy snow, and definitely would rather not be driving in it during April! I think we'll just stay put in the house Wednesday and Thursday, except for snow removal. The nice(?) thing about getting all this snow in April (if there is a "nice" thing) is it SHOULD melt quickly and there will be no reason to shovel the deck - or worse, get up on the roof to shovel that.

solargeek , I remember that storm so well! I was in high school and I swear it was the only time I remember school being closed due to snow. Back then MPS never ever seemed to call off classes. We'd watch the news with each snowstorm and hear all the schools closings - and they always ended with "And MPS is OPEN today!" I would imagine they WERE closed a time or several but the April '73 blizzard is the only one I remember. Maybe it just made that big of an impression on me. That was one heck of a storm. Living up here, I am pretty much OVER April snowstorms. A blizzard last April "only" dumped 14 inches on us. I say "only" because other places in central Wisconsin got so much more - the Fox Cities area did, and if I'm not mistaken Amherst "won" with 33 inches of snow. Several years prior - also in mid-April - we got 18 inches of snow over two days. My husband was at a conference in La Crosse (where it was in the 50's and sunny) and he came home to this mess. At least I was nice and had the driveway cleared by the time he got home. Like I said, I love snow when it knows what months to happen in. But in April, I just want to see some sign of spring. ANY sign...

susannah , Last April we left on vacation April 17 on the 15th we got 10 inches of snow and as we left on the 17th we got another 11 inches but we were on our way to Florida. Last year's April blizzard was kind of a one-two punch for us. And your timing was way better than ours. I mean, picture this: The first wave (where Eagle River got 14 inches) started out Sunday, when we were helping our son and his wife install a new floor down in the southern part of the state. They got zero snow, but we had to head out into it to get home because dh had a business conference/CEU stuff on Tuesday and we needed to get home to pack decent clothes since all we had with us were our "paint clothes". Drove into the blizzard; got off the interstate and stayed the night in a town that ended up getting 18 inches of snow. The truck was doing fine, but other cars on the interstate weren't and we figured it was only a matter of time before the interstate was closed for safety reasons leaving us stranded who knows where. Made it home the next day with no trouble. The truck took one look at our snow drift driveway, purred, and barreled through, basically plowing the snow out of the way as it went. Let me just say again how much I LOVE that truck and how I don't know how we made it 4 winters in the snowbelt without 4WD. We removed the snow from the rest of the driveway and the deck, and packed to leave the next day (conference was in the Dells). Now the Dells had escaped the worst part of snowstorm #1. It did not escape the wrath of snowstorm #2, which I believe is the April 17th one you mention. 10 or so inches of extremely wet, heavy snow. The drive down there was fine, and due to our truck loving snow my friend and I (who accompanied our husbands because this conference was in a fun area) were able to get out and do stuff. Still, I could've lived without the mess. To add insult to injury (whatever that means), Eagle River totally escaped blizzard #2. If we'd stayed home, we would have completely missed it. I guess we were just meant to experience both of the storms. My husband says the weather follows me, but it's really his fault. I mean, his dad was legendary for bringing bad weather wherever he went. I figure it's a genetic/hereditary thing. So how can it be my fault? bluemingidiot, please keep sharing your pretty pictures, because that's about all the spring that I'll see in the near future. But you can keep the 93 degrees, thank you. I mean, we don't even have air conditioning due to warm (but usually not hot) and dry summers. The older I get, the more I lose my capacity to deal with heat. dw, all I can say is WOW. Those are truly some wild weather extremes!

My son got off early today b/c he's supposed to be town (30 min away) at 5 a.m. to shovel. We let him take big 4WD on bad days as we go nowhere.

3 inches of snow today this afternoon. The sandhill crane is walking in the snow. I've never seen that before.

vickinal, how scary! I hope you guys are okay! I said a prayer for you. feather, in the "this weather continues to be bizarre" category, after getting 7 inches of snow Thursday and an inch or two over the next two days, today has been sunny and upper 40's, at least at our house. The snow of this past week is melting, thankfully. Maybe once that's all gone the remaining icebergs in the yard can start to melt. I saw that southeastern/east central Wisconsin was getting snow today. Every once in awhile, our climates flip-flop southern WI weather for northern WI, and vice versa. And lately, it's been more than once in awhile. Seeing a sandhill crane walking in the snow must have been awesome. I've been watching juncos at my suet feeders. I normally take the feeders in by now but this year I'm rolling the dice that the bears are denning a little longer (or at least staying away from my yard) and keeping the feeders up a few weeks beyond my normal times. I mean, I haven't seen any bear tracks in the snow or bear "presents" or anything... The juncos normally feed off the ground and I've never seen them come to a suet feeder before but they're grabbing little morsels of suet, then sitting on the squirrel baffles to eat the stuff before grabbing the next bite. It's been fun to watch them.

susannah, feather, WE are in the 3"-6" range but on the cusp of the 4"-9" they are predicting for Madison area. My SIL was to come up to 1 of the nearby wineries for fun and frolic while my DH is gone to the Knights of Columbus state meeting. She says she will come no matter what but we will see....

My SIL was to come up to 1 of the nearby wineries for fun and frolic while my DH is gone to the Knights of Columbus state meeting. She says she will come no matter what but we will see.... And in the "strange but true" category, here in extreme northern Wisconsin we're not supposed to get any snow today - strange to begin with, BUT we're supposed to be the WARMEST part of the state (while still being below normal temps for late April). Latest forecast is for the heaviest snow to go a little further south, with the Wisconsin/Illinois border getting the most snow. What will ultimately happen is anyone's guess, but right now it's pretty safe to say that the state line area I'm near - Wisconsin/Upper Michigan - isn't getting snow. Not today, anyway. Since May snow isn't all that unusual, I'm reluctant to say we're done with snow for the season. Our property is finally about 92% free of snow, and I'd like the melting to continue. Oh well, at least late season snow doesn't stick around long (usually). I'm wishing your SIL safe travels if she does decide to come up. I'm pretty sure I know at least one of the wineries you're speaking of - and I'm envious.

Snow on the deck and in the gardens, melted in the street and driveway, not covering grass, coming down lightly. Oh, you actually did get snow? It was hard to tell by reports up here if southern WI got snow or not. Now we're supposed to get maybe an inch of slush up here overnight. But right now the sky is blue and it's cool but gorgeous out. Wait a minute, why am I not outside?

Get outside!!!
Yes, we got 2 inches, covered everything, by 10 Am we had half of it melted and now at noon except for a small portion of the deck, it is all gone!
