My Troy-bilt riding mower's blades stopped turning today. I didn't hear a rock or anything to cause it, but it was the first time I've started it up this spring. The blades suddenly failed mid lawn mow. It still runs around otherwise.
Any ideas as to possible causes of this?

Sounds like either the belt is slipping or broke. Or, the clutch solenoid for the power take-off isn't working and may need replacement.

Yup, looks like it's the belt!

I have purchased two refurbished lawn mowers, within 3 years, not a one works! I paid $125.00 for each. The first year each worked great, then by spring both of them won't start at all! Is there something my son should be doing in winter for them? He said he did something, but i can't remember what Today I'm off to a new shop that sells used lawnmowers, or should I just bite the bullet and buy a new one, or have them fix one of the old ones, if possible? I cannot go another spring and summer having the landscaper mow my lawn! Sorry Shin I didn't answer your question, but asked my own...

Usually if a lawnmower won't start after winter, it's due to the battery going bad due to the cold, or the gas going bad due to sitting around too long. I have a portable jump starter I use to start my riding mower when that happens. Despite the long PA winters here usually they aren't long enough to spoil the gas completely.
Not a lawn mower expert here though obviously.

Thanks Shin...I know my son empties the gas in winter, maybe he shouldn't. You know a lot more than I do Shin

There is a lot of debate whether which is best: (1) run the engine dry in the fall or (2) fill the tank, add stabilizer to the gas, run the engine a bit to get the treated gas into the carburetor. I am a #2 person. And, I always, ALWAYS, use non-ethanol (non-oxygenated) premium in all of my small engines.

Thank you Cabin Fever, I just asked my son what he usually does with the mower gas, he does #1. He thanks you too. Now once we get one fixed or a new one, he will definitely do the # 2....you’re a jack of all trades😍
