I was shocked at the cost of acrylic quilting rulers!!! How can a 4.5 inch square cost so much!!

Over the years I have bought acrylic squares in many sizes. If you have Joann Fabrics nearby and you can find their coupons you can lower the cost. They often have 40-50% off regular items. Sometimes I get a gift card and would use that to purchase them.

Hobby Lobby also has 40% off coupons on a regular basis. You can find them on their website.

If you are 'handy' you can make your own by buying some plexiglass and cutting your own. Sometimes the hardware store will cut it for you for a price.

Found this Fiskars Acrylic ruler, normally about 20$ (but on sale apparently now for 13.99 at Joanns) for .99 cents at good will today. Still looking for the 4.5" square. I'll keep looking, but in the meantime, may make one myself from foam board. linkThanks for all the ideas...

The see-through squares are great if you are trying to fussy cut your fabric- also helpful for centering your blocks. You can improvise but if you get the chance to buy the real thing they are nice!!!

Coupons are the way to go. I know a few people who have purchased acrylic and made their own. Those can't be used for strip-cutting or a measurable cut because they aren't laser ruled, but they are awesome for other things. Put Invisigrip on the back to keep them from slipping, or sandpaper dots.

Just wanted to update this in case someone doesn't read the Tightwad tips thread (and you should...)
I found a set of Fons and Porter 2,3,4,and 5 inch squares for 1$ at a scratch and dent store.

Lots of patience, looking for a reasonable price = happy ending.
