It's times like these I'm glad that I've been carrying around my camera. This is only the second time I've witnessed this since starting my wonderful chicken venture back in 2009. <<Disclaimer>> Viewing this video may be a little disturbing to the squeamish out there. ~Mari

Um, I'm not gonna watch it. Awwww, come on... where's your adventurous spirit? You can cover up your eyes during the gross parts! Hmmm... I guess most of the video is pretty grody... But I must say I find it pretty fascinating as well... ~Mari

Oh, that was a tiny little snake - at first it looked like a really long worm.
My snake-hating husband cheered when he saw the video. I thought it was pretty interesting to watch, but then again I kinda like snakes so I don't get grossed out by them - my friends and I would catch snakes and play with them when we were kids. Much to my mom's dismay.
Didn't look like the chicken was interested in sharing, did it?

It's a train wreck, isn't it? You know you shouldn't look, just turn your head...but you can't! LOL!!!
I killed a couple baby snakes in the garden a few weeks back. I scooped them up in a shovel and took it over to the gals. The guineas started circling it, bobbing their heads, and doing their squawking thing they do. A chicken was watching all this with amazement and awe. Walked through them and gulp! gulp!and walked off never looking back. You could almost see the gears turning in the guineas' minds, "What just happened?!" Of all times not to have the camera. Hilarious and gross!

That was so cool!!! That chicken wasn’t going to let any others share, that’s for sure.
I wish I had seen Loretta peck those five rats🐀 she caught, to death. Thank God she didn’t eat those dirty critters. Guess they’re not tasty like snakes.

I wondered how they managed that. I mean, they can't cut a snake into bite sized bits. I used to watch our goldfish catch worms. One would swim fast around while the others tried to grab it from the first fish. This chicken/snake thing reminded me of the. But, worms squish down pretty good. Good grief, how did she breath with that thing down her throat?

Reading TEN's description, I coughed then gagged. And when Maura described, I was reminded of having a foot long hair down my throat and pulling it out. I gagged. Now stop it!

When I first saw her going after the snake like wildfire I knew I didn't have a chance to "rescue" it... Especially when it was a couple of inches down her gullet after a few seconds-ha!! I have indeed rescued many snakes and especially frogs from our outdoor cats I must say... Chickens so amuse me - especially when they are babies and they find something interesting in the brooder and clamp it in their beak and run around like a nut chirping - and then everyone ends up chasing them wanting what they have... doesn't change much when they become "adults". ~Mari

I just watched my video of her again... isn't it interesting how a couple of times she holds it down with her foot - then raises her head up to "stretch" it in an attempt to "break" it? Fascinating...

Good grief, how did she breath with that thing down her throat? Funny you say that.... I once tossed a cat and dog killed snake into the chicken pen which was rather large, say 2 feet and correspondingly round. I figured they would fight and pick it apart, like everything else. Nope, came back a few hours later, with one hen walking around looking like she was drowning/choking- large eyes, funky facial expressions, and head and neck movements going as she either was trying to work the rest in past the 8 or so inches she sucked down versus the rest, or was trying to get it all back out. I didn't see how she was going to get any more of it into her crop or get it back out, so I caught her and hung her upside down and rubbed her neck while I carefully pulled the snake back out. I think she did some temporary damage to her throat, as for weeks she would randomly make funky head and neck jerking movements that went away after a couple of months. Stupid hen is at least 8 years old now and still alive and kicking. And I now chop down any snakes I give them ahead of time. Though I try to stick to just giving rodents.

When I've seen our chickens eat a snake, toad or mouse, it makes me ever so grateful I'm my size and they are theirs!
