Hi All. I've had the "ingredients" to make a gnome-home to sit outside somewhere, together on my work table for a month. Basically a pot covered with pebbles and cute door. I Needed to post here to help me feel committed and finally get started! Thanks for any encouragement! giggle. The frame is a plastic pot I had(although I kinda like the look of a plastic bowl better in examples I saw;but didn't have a spare so using what I had ) The skylight for up top is an old solar path light that was made of glass and battery rusted out awhile ago but I'd kept the glass for "something"...haha. The canister has quik-set mortar in it and the bag is lg tumbled aquarium gravel. Also I have small gravel to fill in holes between larger pretty color beach rocks I'll use around the bottom and for some "wall" accents. The adorable door is made is England and found on Amazon for about $5. Here goes! Now that you all have Seen the makings, I'll Have to DO this....I need the table space Too! PS- If any of you have such a thing already I'd love to see pictures of any style! Holes in stumps and all kinds of things are used by people who enjoy the thought.

hobbitlady sounds intriguing! Do feel free to post pics of the steps of your project! It sounds great! What exactly do you do with it when it's done?

AD in WNC, They are just cute decor for flower areas and such. I'll want to see it finished before I know where I'll put mine! haha. If a hole is left under one side and they are placed in a damp shady spot, they can become a "toad abode" or safe frog refuge too. In the sun I guess a lizard might take up residence but I've never seen that posted anywhere. Lots of examples of finished ones are on pinterest or google-search.

I cannot wait to see what you come up with hobbitlady ! Now, I do feel inspired to try my hand at one myself. A few years ago I was more than inspired by pics that Megan (daughter of Woodpecker ) had shared with me of her precious mushroom garden. Since then, I've been looking for ceramic mushrooms to fashion my own. Here's my latest acquirement from last fall I think it was... Now I'm thinking that a fairy/gnome/toad/frog house would look just adorable in the midst of a mushroom/toadstool garden!! Thanks so much for giving me this cool idea my friend! ~Mari

Progress! I Knew that posting this thread would motivate me. #1-- I balanced the round plastic pot in a cardboard box and am rotating and doing just a little at a time (the "up" area that doesn't slip). #2 ---The toad-access door in the back. I wonder if I'll like the natural cave look better than the cute door!? Edit: This is Not a good way to make one of these...I'm starting to think it'll fall apart due to mortar being on plastic, lol. I'll bet a clay pot would hold Much better. When I saw the examples the person had the pot upright and kinda stacked the rocks as they went up. SO! If anybody tries this, do Not do it my way!!! Hahahahah

Not in place yet, but "testing" the look of a petrified wood roof I'll finish with, courtesy of DH. I like it. He said "I wondered why I picked up those Little pieces. I'm So happy you'll be using them". Usually he lugged boulders,or at the least chunks, when we rock hounded. hahaha. Sides are almost done now;more than pic. It'll be a clunky gnome type house;no elegant fairy stuff for My garden (or edge of woods). After all we don't even have a lawn or any place that could be called elegant,it's all real casual and half wild around here (except my raised beds) and our only hang out is the covered porch.

Oh my word I love the look of that roof - really cool hobbitlady ! I have purchased petrified wood in the past and tumbled it and must say it is up there with my all time favorites to tumble - it turns out just perfect and absolutely gorgeous! ~Mari

That is so cool and cute!!! I hope a little frog finds it to take a nap in Your place sounds quite a bit like mine. I surely don't have as much property as you, though. I do decorate things here with plants and I've started and more than completed my "heart," made all of heart shape rocks, around a statue of Mother Mary. It's getting mighty big. My daughter loves mushrooms. She had purchased 6 or 7 stone mushrooms, different sizes, that are around our maple tree, that's where I made the heart of hearts. There's so many roots there from the Maple I can never get flowers to take. I usually buy a big plant to put near Mother Mary...late this year. Nice job on your little house...you are sure creative my dear!!!

TA DAH!!!! Now it's done and I sure like it a Lot more than I expected to! It really came together. I need to coat it with a couple more layers of marine polyurethane to Hold it together though (plastic pot was Not a good base. When I first picked it up to turn it rocks would fall off due to slight flex inside.)

Oh hobbitlady, I just showed the pic to my husband - we TOTALLY love it! He was asking about the door - he thought it was really neat. I just told him where you got it - then he says I ought to make a gnome-home but instead use stained glass. I didn't think of that! I have made a LOT of mosaic flower pots in the past... Thanks again for a wonderful idea! ~Mari

Very cute.
DH and I attended an auction and there was a pair of little gnomes that didn't sell. The seller asked us to take them, just to get them off the property as the new owners didn't want them. Now what to do with them?

mogal, please don't say you haven't thought to send them to hobbitlady. I'm pretty sure I'm not the first person to have that thought. Or Start a collection of them? They can watch over the gardens.

Actually, I've been thinking about putting them at the base of a gnarled tree. DH keeps asking me when I'm going to toss them so, of course, I want to put them where they'll aggravate him most. GRINNNNN. Only kidding about deliberately trying to bug him.
