We had jersey and Angus at one time but we're thinking of getting back into cattle on a small scale again. We're talking 2-4. Short horn or Hereford are a consideration. I want a breed that is hardy, fairly docile. We are definitely not into dexter or highland, and I don't want dairy. Any suggestions are appreciated.

All around, I like a crossbreed. Started my herd with Holstein x Hereford from first calf Holstein dairy heifers bred to a Hereford bull bucket raised after a week nursing Mamma. Some were great milkers for the house. Full beef I like Hereford x Angus or what is called a Black Baldy. Better disposition than straight Angus, same price at market. Bigger frame, more pounds weaned. Weather and climate as well as feed makes a big difference though. Poor grazing lands need a cow acclimated to that. A "fat" body type cow can walk off all it's weight, walking to the next mouth full....James

Depends a little on where you are at. Down here, some type of Brahman cross tolerates the heat very well.

Shorthorns are beefy but not known for regular breeding. I love Herefords but unless you get the bred up ones with a patch on the eyes, they are As ,more prone to pinkeye and hoof problems due to light feet. As Jolly,says it depends on where you are.

I have been happy with my black Angus bottle calves, the are docile. .remember with any large animal always be alert and a escape route if needed

Haha--I first read this as "Best BREAD for the homestead" Well that's sourdough, silly. Other than that, we have black angus (which we no longer eat due to cholesterol issues). The black angus meat is VERY lean though. The breed is VERY skittish though. Try as they did, our kids were never able to show our calves in 4H. I hoped to gentle one into letting me milk. Nope.
